I had a friend with exactly the same gig one summer. He said that he didn't sell much porn, mostly just "whipped cream cartridges" and balloons to the frat types.

Yeah, I sold a lot of nitrous, "video head cleaner," etc. The store was (and still is) in Morgantown, WV, which houses both a college and some serious redneck enclaves. The clientele was about 70% gay men, due to the basement "facilities."
It was actually a decent job, as I got to sit around and read a lot. But there was weirdness.
