I read too much, visit forums too much, and generally waste a lot of time, so I won't be able to accurately cite the source. With that being said...

I've often heard there are three levels to Martial Arts training.

The first being the forms level. This is for the absolute beginner to teach them the structure of the style.

The 2nd being the tui shou, playing hands, chi sau stage. This is where you start to play with the techniques and start using the principles with another person.

The 3rd is the free fighting stage. This is where you really start to internalize and apply the concepts of the style.

Then there's the mastery level where you're able to incorporate other styles and concepts into your own application.

----

IMO, the problems we express with TCMA are because there's a tradition of spending way too much time in levels 1 and 2, and real personal development doesn't happen in those levels. What were finding now is that there's difficulty in properly achieving the 3rd level. We're having to write the book to get there because it kind've got lost. To make matters worse, a lot of the middle aged masters that are teaching now realized this - unfortunately during the 70's and 80's, and the style of fighting that they tried to bridge to isn't good ultimately for modern TCMA.

Gloves change the way you hit. Why do people value gloved sparring so much when it is impossible to fight that way ungloved?

Gloved sparring is worthless because:

a) it encourages you to hit in a way that will mean you break your hand on the first or second punch, unless you are a girl or a small child

b) it trains false reactions, in both the puncher and punchee, that only hold when gloves are worn

c) it instills dangerous false confidence based on a model that is not close to reality. Gloved sparring is in some ways the opposite of Kano's genius in revolutionising grappling with randori. Randori removes the dangerous techniques while allowing realistic grappling training with full resistance. Gloved sparring actually accentuates the dangerous techniques while providing a completely false framework of action and reaction.

Does it turn you into a hulking beast like they say it did for UFC fighter Vitor Belfort? I'm confused because I'm assuming I have regular testosterone levels and I'm not a hulking monster.

Does trt give you an advantage over a guy whose testosterone levels are normal?

Is it possible for me to test at a too high testosterone level even though I've never used trt?

Quite often when A expressed an opinion, B disagreed, if A

- respond to it, A will be trapped into a long argument.
- didn't respond to it, B will be offended.

Allow me to borrow Miqi's statement here:

"I don't argue, I just tell you, and you listen or not. All the best."

I find this may be the best way for online discussion. You put up your opinion and I put up mine. You don't expect me to agree with you. I don't expect you to agree with me either.

- You "tell" me how you feel. It's up to me to listen to you or not.
- I "tell" you how I feel. It's up to you to listen to me or not.

Please notice that the word "tell" is very important key word for this thread.

I have always loved to have a discussion environment like this. Sometime we my just be too cautious to choose our words inorder not to offend others. When we do that, we restrice ourselves to open our heart completely. It just takes away the fun of online discussion. I have been in another "internal" forum for a long time. Oneday I just realized that no matter how careful that I might choose my words, someone was always offended by my opinion. I just decide to leave that environment.

For example, whenever I have seen the words "internal" or "push", I just have to say something. 99% of the time, my opinion will offend someone. I can always have 2 options. To say whatever I want to say, or to say whatever people want to hear. If I can't be honest to myself, I may not respect myself enough.

What's your thought on this?

Since the horse stance has already been addressed I'm curious to other stances not covered.

I would like to get everyones thoughts on the following stances.

Forward and reverse bo:

lead leg bent at 90 degree with knee not quite over the big toe, with the back leg straight and the back foot flat on the ground.
reverse bo is done... in reverse back leg is at 90 ect.

twisted stance:

front leg at 90, back leg 90 with the knee touching the calve of the front leg

monkey stance:

front leg 90 back leg 90 with knee 6 inched from ground

cat:

don't really know how to explain with out pictures, but back leg slightly bent (35 degrees? (sp?)) with weight on back leg front leg is also bent with the heal riased and toe barley touching ground in a ready posture for a front snap kick.

Thoughts?
