neito,
a classmate of mind runs a small class in Edmonton. I've shot off an e-mail to him to see if he is accepting new students. I'll get back to you.
Our style is Bak Hsing Choy Lee Fut Gar.

Hi Neito,
If you are looking for a very traditional southern kung fu, check out;
http://grndragon.worldgate.ca (Green Dragon Kung Fu Group).
I should probably mention that you ought to get your Sifu's permission before studying at another school - most teacher's won't take you very seriously if you train at two schools at the same time.
Cheers - kevin

i appreciate your input, i should also mention that my main interest is in learning close range techniques. what styles focus on these? ( other than wing chun which i'm already learning). There appears to be hung gar, northern mantis, tibetan white crane, as well as the styles you guys mentioned arround town.
It seems that there is a general consensus that southern styles teach more hand techniques, does that mean that they are also closer range? anybody know anything about FRANK LEE and his school?

i appreciate your concern but i dont think my sifu will mind, mainly because he does'nt even know who i am. ( our class is really crowded). I actually have'nt even received instruction from him yet, because the beginner class is taught by high ranking students. I like wing chun, but you can see why i'd also like to train somewhere else. Unfortunatly one can only do so much at one time.

Are you at the UofA as a student or just taking wing chun there? If you don't mind me asking, what are you taking for courses(if you're attending)? I plan on going there next year but I still have a lot to get done first.
Are you living on campus? From what I understand there's a wide choice of martial arts clubs there, so if you are simply looking for more training in general it'd probably be best to stay within the campus for efficiency's sake.

- true there is alot of selection, but the other styles they had did,nt really interest me. Aikido looked interesting because they use lots of joint locks, but i tried Aikido in St. Albert before and found their approach rather frustrating, i found that i did'nt like their huge sweeping arm movements. for joint locking something like chin na, taijutsu or yawara seem more appealing to me. I'd try their tai chi class but they seem to focus only on forms (unlike other tai chi clubs in town that also do self defence) .maybe i'm too picky.
- Yah i'm a student at the university, i'm majoring in japanese and minoring in sociology. I live in st. albert :D

Japanese eh? I took some Japanese courses but didn't follow through on it the whole way because I slacked too much in the middle of highschool so when it came to grad time I had to take some other courses to ensure I got my diploma.
What style I study is currently none. I've been unable to get to my Kung fu school as of last spring so I eventually stopped going there. I have kept up some of what I've learned there, but haven't been able to get back to the school on a regular basis.
That's partially what interested me in your post. I hope to join some MA clubs when I get to the UofA. In fact i'm counting on it. I'm just trying to stay in shape until then, or until something else comes up.
When I get up there next year, I wouldnt mind looking into Aikido. The philosophy of it really interests me and I respect it's uniquely passive motions(depending on where you learn).
Sorry if I make you wait to long for replies. My computer is kind of buggy lately and I'm not on it as much as usual.

your lucky that you did'nt finish japanese 30. if you want to bump up your gpa at university you can take japanese 101 and ace it ( it basically covers japanese 10 and part of twenty). Since i finished japanese 30 i'm not allowed into japanese 101 or 102, and have to start at 150, which is much harder. Anyway, good luck with your finals. we should meet up sometime when you come to the UofA next year. -see yah
