Ok I posted this over on the main forum but to no luck. Lemme try it here.

Ok, I filed my tax return today and found I am getting a good amount back. Not as much as they witheld (kept almost half when I am only 18), but I am getting a so, so amount back. With the money, and some I plan to save up, I want to order a Mook Yan Jong.

Not a super huge one, but not some cheap $50 one. What are some good places? I already checked out Martial Arts Mart.com and Woodendummy.com. While impressed, too much even for me.

I think the place I will put it in my room is about 6 feet wide, so that is probably the biggest Mook I can get. Height can't exceed 8 feet. Anyway, what are some good sites for fair priced Mook Yan Jongs?

I know I've seen them for about $500-$600 before for a nice one. Anyone who can help? I've checked some martial arts supply stores around my area to no avail.

Hi Philbert,

While there is nothing like a finely crafted wooden dummy the price can sometimes be a bit out of reach. I am including a few links for you to check out.

One place which offers both traditional and pvc dummies is The Great Lion Company located in Georgia, Atlanta(?) Anyhow here is a link to the PVC model which runs around $400.00

http://www.woodendummy.net/pvc.html

Here is a link which lists two dummies one priced around $600

http://www.karatedepot.com/store/catalog/search.html?AID=805727&PID=948424&mv_doit=search&mv_matchlimit=15&mv_search_field=name%2Cdescription%2Cnote%2Ccatego ry%2Csubcategory%2Csku%2Cmanufacturer&mv_searchspec=wooden%20dummy

Here is a list of some resources which may help:

http://martialarts.about.com/cs/dummies/

Ashville Woodcrafters have a fairly good rep. Dummies seem to start at around $650.00

Here is a free standing PVC model:

There are plenty more you can search for inclugin cougar mountain which I had a student purchase from. He was happy with the purchase. The site appears to be down at the moment but you may want to try again later to see if they get it back up. I know they ahve both wood and pvc dummies.

Now that I have given you even more to wade through in making your decision, nice guy huh, :rolleyes: here is my take on the area for the dummy;

First of all an ideal dummy would, IMHO, be a wooden one. However, if price is a consideration then you could do okay with a quality PVC one. Just make sure you use wooden arms as the PVC round arms don't provide the same feedback. My first wooden dummy dummy was a series of 2x4's nailed together and with round holes drilled in it. I then moved up to a PVC model which I kept in my wall-locker in the army. Finally, I got a real wooden dummy and it has lasted for over ten years now. The point is that you can make some progress with a PVC dummy if that is what you can afford.

The height of the dummy should not be anywhere near 8 feet, unless you are training to fight pro basketball players :D . Closer to 5 feet is more realistic. As to the width this will depend on the stand or support. I have found that around 4 1/2 to 5 feet works for me. Any more will put more strain on the support slats and since the horizontal cross peices don't allow you to move beyond a certain point wider does not, IMHO, serve any real purpose. So, if you have a ceiling height of 6 feet and a wdith of 4-5 feet you have the space to play the dummy. Of course, you need about 3 feet in front of the dummy to play with too. ;)

Anyhow I hope this is a litle bit of help. Good luck. If you can save the money and purchase a traditional wooden dummy I can assure you the investment will be worth it. Properly cared for the dummy will last a lifetime. Not so sure about the PVC ones(??). There are also a few on this board who have made dummies and perhaps they may be able to help you. I think Majic Sam is one of them.

Peace,

Dave

Thank you so much for those links. So far the best I've found was a plastic one for $650, http://www.martialartsupply.com/Training_Gear/Striking_Bags/Immortal_Free_Standing_Dummy/immortal_free_standing_dummy.html

Thank you for the links, chances are I will probably save up for the extra cover charge. Like I said, I got $420 already from the tax return, I could save up some money over the next few months. My standard pay check would be anywhere from $150 a week or up depending on how good the week is at my job as a waiter. One guy got a $140 in a single night a few weeks ago in 4 hours, so I might end up with a wooden dummy.

One question on the PVC dummy, it says Portable Stand and Corner Stand. What is a Corner Stand? I see the Portable Stand is in the picture, and thats kind of how I want my dummy, in the corner of my room.

The reason why I said the 8 feet one is that I've seem some that were freaking huge. These things looked to be about 6 feet high if not more. The round part was normal height, it was the support structure that made it so large.

I figure I have plenty of space. The one I saw the other day at the school I am going to start training at was very nice. About 5 feet across and 5 feet high. I couldn't stop staring at it. Anyway, thanks again.

woodendummy.net 's stands are probably better quality tho. They look more sturdy. I copied their design for my stand :)

IronFist, yeah thats the Ashville Woodcutters, that Sihing73 mentioned.

http://www.angelfire.com/biz2/woodendummy/awcindex.html

Chances are, I will be buying from them if I buy a wooden dummy to have sent to my home. That is if I can't find one in my area.

Hello Fillbert,

IMO,the pvc model from Great Lion is as good as it gets for the $-I would avoid stationary dummies;they lack active movement, which is half the fun.Great Lion pvc's have both JKD and WC leg options, and a slightly cheaper stand for that model. You will not be let down.$600 should cover everything including shipping. All the best.

I thought half the fun with the Jong was making your own.
I have heard there are many manauls on the subject. I built one copying the construction of one in my Kwoon, and spent less than $200 on everything including pads. Not too difficult, can take time though.

Cheers

i made a dummy out of pvc pipe. i got a piece of pipe for the trunk for free from a consturction site (they have a lot of left over peices that are too short to use for anything so you cant get them easy). then i just bought pvc pipe arms, and a made a leg with a joint, then i had some wood from around the house to make the stand. it worked real well. you just have to make sure you have all the right tools. you can make flat one's too. ive made a couple flat ones that i screwed into doors. just be creative and you can make a decient substitute.
