Where would you rather be, in on a single/double that you haven't quite finished, or on the other end of that preparing to counter?

Either way its a fight, but what is your preference?

Ah dude, that is full of lots of grays there.
I mean, way to many variables to choose.
If I am the "shooter", do I have control of one of the legs?
If I am the "defender", where are my arms?
Am I against a wall/barrier?
Is the shooter on high or low?
IS the defender square on or side ways?
Etc,e tc...

The first post was a little vague, but here are my thoughts. In an competitive MMA setting, if your shoot is unsuccessful at first, it is probably best to step back an reengage in a different range. I have seen too many examples of people trying to muscle through the throw that didn't come off as planned, and they exhaust so much energy. However, things would be different if 1) I was primarily a ground guy with bad striking, which means I would have to exert that energy since my stand-up sucks. OR 2) The fight is drawing to an end, going to decision, I will attempt to finish the takedown to score points with the judges.

Assume any variables you like.

I personally like to fight standing up, most of my training in "takedowns" is takedown defense and my shooting is a weakness, so I'd prefer to be countering
