View Full Version : The Ultimate Fighter
Didn't see a thread about this anywhere. Oh well, too bad if one already existed.
Those in the states know about this show and most importantly that tonight 6/21/08) is the live Season 7 finale. Fighting for a contract with the UFC is Amir Sodallah from Team Forrest and CB Dollaway from Team Rampage.
Anyone follow this past season? What do people think of the show in general.
The last episode was a doozey...

I can't stand this show. It was neat at first but now I just find it annoying and pointless.
I like their countdown shows though, those are pretty cool.
That's cool. I really didn't like when it first came out. Then I studied some grappling and understand about some of the concepts. The show is an obvious plug that seems to have worked.
I don't really keep up myself but I check in from time to time. Some of the people are just idiots. But some of them know how to fight and that is what counts (for this show...in real life a different story).
Tonight's highlights in my opinioin...Diego Sanchez' win was nice. Probably the best fight of the night in my opinion. In other fights, a lot of open areas that weren't attacked. But Diego was like a bull and kept at it.
Of course, underdog Amir takes it for the contract. I was rooting for this guy. They had nothing to say about him except that he had a lot of heart...prob because CB Dollaway was already picked the winner in people's minds. Nice arm bar (for the second time to the same opponent).
The stand up fighting is not why I watch. The form is bad...arms never stay up to guard, wild punches (haymakers and supermans). The ground techniques are what I find interesting about this show It is probably the main reason I watch.
I think Quinton has some kind of speech impediment. I had trouble understanding his commentaries...was I the only one?

Now that they're trying to get into the personalities of guys who don't actually have much as personalities go, it has become a jump the shark show.
I agree that when it first came out it was good, it had intensity and everything like that, but now, it has too much Dana advising the guys of this or that.
bleh, dull.
Well, they gotta use fillers in between the fights.
Dana's a cool dude. Good businessman and people just seem to respect him. His last minute decision, which seems to be a big deal, was probably tough for him to do. To take out a heavy hitter like Jesse (good fighter, but not too bright) changed the direction of the finale. It shows us that even though UFC is the MMA monopoly right now and it's employees are somewhat juvenile, they still have standards that set it apart from a group of brawlers and thugs. I think that is one takeaway.
I don't know what direction the show will go in but aside from the fights, the house scenes are your typical reality type show fanfare...a bunch of people in a house and the drama that ensues. Like I said before, just looking at ground technique is my main focus.

i enjoy the show. i was mixed on this season. they had two fight every episode and didnt have as much "around the house" footage so i couldn't really follow the fighters too well. but when they showed footage of them in the house it was the idiot drunk running around the house pi$$in himself. Either way i enjoy it. I definately agree with the decition to drop that guy. They have spent a lot of time to reverse the feeling people originally had about the UFC and they dont need people like this guy to screw it up
I'll just watch the dvd's from the beginning. At the time, I didn't care for stuff like that. 5 years worth of seasons to get through.
Yeah, JT messed up and that's what happens when your actions make othher people look bad. I think that Dana was not as much angry about the behavior itself...it was just that JT stupidly screamed out that he was a UFC fighter. Dana does not want that kind of reputation, even though there probably are a lot of people who have the same mind set.
Season 7 on Friday and a revisit of the famed Season 1 all day Saturday.
I missed most of it and am catching up on the end but some of these people really didn't know how to fight. Learning curve anyone....?
I'll end up watching the dvd's eventually but it's nice that this all leads up to the new season.
Looks to be an interesting match up.

There's a guy from American Top Team in Orlando, my neck of the woods. Hope he makes Orlando look good. :-)

And you thought Rampage had a speech impediment...try understanding Nogueira.

Rampage did. He might have been too hyperactive.
Nogueira isn't so bad for someone who wasn't born in the states. If he breaks out into Spanish, it'll be good practice for me. If he curses or says stuff in Portugese, then I'll be lost. ;)

I actually have been more impressed by Noguiera than I thought I would. He is an excellent fighter, no doubt, but he's much more down to earth and humble than I thought he'd be.
This seasons fighters appear to be pretty solid. I'm interested in seeing that blond kids' melt down. Nothing like train wreck TV.
On the show, both seem like good guys. Noguiera's definitely got skills as well as Mir. Besides the show, I actually can't wait to see their fight.
Back to the show. Well, as was expected in the land of reality tv, there was drama and entertainment. I was surprised Dana went with thatdecision. Either he has plans or he just wants good tv. Just a guess but we'll have to wait and see.
However, seems like Junie's second chance was used up very very quickly. It's just a matter of common sense.
All in all, it was an ok episode. The best part was probably the house scenes. The fight was a bit lackluster. People talk a lot of talk before hand.

That was shocking, Junie is a retard...my two second psychoanalysis is deep seeded emotional problems stemming from some sort of abuse/molestation in his youth. He is way to unstable and I can't believe he's not behind bars already.
Glad to see Shane got what was coming to him in the ring...one idiot down, one to go. I just can't stand people who get a few adult beverages in them, build up some liquid courage and start picking fights...MMA seems to attract an interesting range of people.
I'm surprised they let it go so far. There's some personal issues he seems to need to deal with.
Shane looked like he had the better stand up lacked confidence. He should have taken a few drinks beforehand. ;)
Liquid courage...it either makes you the nicest guy in the world or turns you into the person that ****es everyone off. Way to be that person....
I have to say, they pick idiots to be on tv...I guess why they call it reality television.
Like Dana said, Junie's got 9 lives. Let's see how long that lasts.
The stint about the practical jokes was a good waste of time. Props to Noguiera for stepping up to try and do something about it. It amazes me how these guys act toward him. Even though he's not their coach, he is a named fighter and one of the coaches for the show.
The fight was a good one. Shane made a fatal mistake and the other guy took full advantage and never let up. Great ground game.

Can bet the practical jokes aren't over:D
But I'll agree that they do get out of hands, ****ing on the pillow, he'll them's fighting actions.
Junie is one wacked out guy but you never know, he might have the goods.

I can't wait till Junie gets knocked the bleep out..he's gonna cry and cry. I wish someone would start pushing his buttons in the house, he's a coward at heart.
I'm all for the pranks, god knows I'd be doing the same thing in those circumstances, they just can't seem to keep them in good fun. Some retard (no offense) always overreacts.
Depends on the context of the joke and who wants play along. If you involve everyone, that's pretty serious. Not everyone has the same sense of humor and the people who want to act like kids can apply itching powder to each other while all the serious minded people can focus on what they need to. It's a very simple concept.
H. Hammer...you seem like a good guy but we probably wouldn't get along dude ;)
I thought Roli was going to pull and upset. He came into the first round very confident...and throwing front kicks (something I don't see very often in UFC). Then some bravado with a spinning back hand.
I don't think he pushed hard enough....his take down attempts didn't look like he put enough effort.
Junie is a tough dude but really STUPID. He was smart enough to not go to the ground. Rolando would have capitalized in that situation.
Junie really has luck on his side. Let's see how long it lasts. It makes me wonder with all the editing and what not...who will come out on top.

Probably one of the worst fights I've seen, Roli showed some heart but both guys were gassed and unimpressive. Junie will go down in the next round for sure. Frank Mir cracks me up....love the BJJ blackbelt story.

the fact that it's a big brother/ufc format makes that show the total ghey now.
it's like a bunch of teenage girls frenetically, vapidly and vacuously doing nothing but getting hyped up about stuff they demonstrate they don't have a lot of skill in.
like a d-list talent contest.
I got sick of it.

Exactly! I hear that the contract is nowhere near what top non-UFC guys can get and so many guys won't bother trying to enter as the pay off is not what it seems. They need to increase it to 7-figure contract.
Also, if you look at season one, how many guys from it are in the UFC still? At least half...and of those who got kicked off, many are headlining and taking big fights. This is not the same for any other season.
One of the more lighter episodes...no drama just training and fighting. Well, except for the exchange between Noguiera and Vinny. Portuguese is nothing like Spanish...i couldn't pick out not one word that I recognized. That should be my next endeavor.
Junie seems to be the breakout star this season but he's still an idiot.
The prank that was pulled was ultimately harmless but it was cool.
The fight I was expecting to be exciting. Vinny has good BJJ and it was only a matter of time before he got a submission. His goal now I gather is to work on his stand up.

Nogueira speaks Brasilian, a type of Portuguese with a very distinctive dialect/accent.
Mainland Portuguese is easy to understand IF you speak mainland Spanish.

Ah, I was not aware that he spoke that type of dialect. I thought it would be easy to pick out some words. I don't hear it spoken that often (any type of Portuguese dialect) so I didn't what to expect.
I was told that there were similar words and that a Spanish speaking person could communicate with a person who spoke Portuguese (I guess up to a certain level).
I actually tested this out some time ago and it went okay. Basic communications were easily identified and responded to. But, it is apparent that there is more than meets the eye/ear.
Thanks for the explanation Sanjuro. I didn't know that Portuguese had different dialects. Kind of complicates things a little. Thank goodness for subtitles. :D
Maybe after Portuguese...it's the old Aztec language that is worth a look at. hehe

In my experience, it seems that native speakers of Portuguese understand Spanish more easily than native speakers of Spanish understand Portuguese.

There is:
Mainland Portuguese
Brasilian Portuguese
Acores Portuguese ( at least 2 or 3 types here)
Madeirence Portuguese ( Island of Madeira)
Macao Portuguese
African Portuguese ( Angola and Mozambique)
Goa Portuguese
I don't think I missed any...

The guys from season 1 have had longer to prove themselves by winning fights. They also had the advantage of only having 1 seasons worth of people to compete with. With the show going longer and longer UFC's stable is bigger and people will be drawn on less. I am willing to bet that 90% of the guys from all seasons have some kind of contract with the UFC. I remember Joe Rogan saying the UFC has 250 fighters on contract. How many fight regularly? Also, the top payout I have seen for an MMA guy is $250K for Lesnars fights, and Fedor I think got $200K for his destruction of Sylvia. There is no way the UFC is going to pay 7 figures to a reality show winner. If you see the payouts of most of the fighters on a typical UFC card they are being paid between $3K and $30K (which is high). With that percpective, 6 figures is a big deal.

I finally caught this episode last night, as I was in New Orleans last week. The exchange between Vinny and Noguiera was good, at least it peaked my interest in the episode.
The fight was another yawner, the guy fighting Vinny was completely mortified, he psyched himself out into complete inaction. Vinny's leg kicks weren't half bad, if he could only develop some hand combos before he sends the roundhouse, he might be dangerous on his feet.
No way Junie becomes a breakout star...he's way overrated and under performing. Wait till he loses one and has a complete meltdown.
I missed last week's episode and was waiting for a rerun. Maybe this weekend.
Last night's episode was mildly entertaining. That knockout in the house had me reeling with laughter. Out cold with a stupid look on his face.
Junie learned his lesson seemingly but ****, there was something about his betrayal that I missed last week.
The prank was over-the-top. Krzysztof had nothing to say when it was his turn...very different when he's not the victim. His return prank took so much effort but it kind of screwed everyone over in the end. It looked cool but all in all, seemed pointless.
The fight was shorter than I expected. Good stand up...except for that knee exchange. That armbar came out of nowhere and was executed very quickly. Props to Krzysztof for winning. He just needs to change his attitude a little in my opinion.

Mild conjecture is what I offered as I have no idea where the show is going. In the respect that he entertains, he may be a ratings getter but everyone's there to get a little exposure. Junie shouldn't be around in all actuality but he was very lucky. For some reason, that type of tv is what the networks want. Like I wrote before, it looks as if he learned to mellow out for a bit.
**Way too much alcohol in the house.
Vinny's kicks were brutal and exact but yeah, his combinations need work. He was able to win and he's just happy about that at this point.

I wanted to see some better striking from Krystof, was a fairly ez victory for him and I thought he handled the pranks well. I think he maybe one of the most solid fighters with the right mindset, he's mentally sound.
The Mir Nogueira soccer shoot out was hilarious...I'm glad to see they added some coaches challenges...the first time I've seen Mir rattled.
