...anyways i have to take this "hapkido self defense" class for P.E. credit at UT Austin. anyways

i had this problem...where i really wanted to blurt out how full of SH!T the self defense applications were...

like when they were teaching defense against a wrist grab, i forgot which direction i was supposed to "rotate my arm" "the masters way", so this girl was all "HERE! LET ME SHOW YOU!"

so i applied a 60% wrist grab, and after two seconds of trying to rotate out, she yells "YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO LET GO!!!!"

anyways...do you guys have a problem with not criticizing a martial arts class and so called "self defense" classes?

actually don't answer that question...LOL

well if you were supposed to let go than you should let go. i mean if this were a real confrontation and they did the technique while saying "now you let go" i can't imagine a situation where the attacker wouldn't immediately comply with the victims order. I believe the proper form is to let go and apologize for not recognizing the technique and having to be told you have to let go. i mean if we didnt comply with these basic self defense techniques the world would be dangerous and someone might actually get hurt. it would be madness.

maybe you have superior wrist controlling ability.

I saw no mention of him having pulled out his gun.

See? Only problem was his incomplete technique.

Oh, man. That's bad.

Was the girl an instructor or a student in the class?

If she is a student, you can forgive her arrogance.

If an instructor...maybe she learned something.

It takes a lot to make me angry. Bad self defense insruction makes me angry. When I was younger I was more polite; I kept my mouth shut in those situations. Now I enjoy being an iconoclast. It's good to shake people up once in awhile. Most of these modern self-defense systems have never seen real combat.

On a lighter note: again, happy birthday, Dragon!

I think you should perform your techniques correctly.

Oso

depends on if that is the first level of the training.

I heard this description of a progression of training techniques last night:

1 - telegraphed motion, slow speed

2 - not telegraphed, slow speed

3 - telegraphed, high speed

4 - not telegraphed, high speed

as in, practice a technique with the attacker attacking as above.
only go to the next level once you have acheived about an 80% success rate on the given technique.

harder to gauge for grabby stuff but you could start off w/ low power grip and gradually increase the power applied by the attacker until you figure out at what point the defender is unable to do the technique...and I suppose you could figure out some sort of mass/weight ratio and congratulate the woman on her ability to dissolve a grab from a person +/- xx% of her weight.

but that's thinking too much...

In most self defense against grabbing the error is usually made to have the defender attempt some sort of disengaging/disolving technique w/o any striking. fi the opponent is bigger and stronger, it don't work so well.

Self defense against a single armed grab =
a) don't get hit by the other hand, a foot or their head
b) punch them in the nose.

OR

pull your weapon from it's legally licensed place of conealment and shoot them :D:p;)

If it's pass/fail do what you want. You'll pass.

If it's going to affect your GPA keep your mouth shut. Especially if the instructor is Korean. Talking in class is not supposed to be tolerated. The Koreans learned Tang Soo, Gim Do, Yau Do and Hap Ki Do from the Japanese during a very militaristic period of Japanese cultural development and adopted the teaching style. The Japanese themselves may have been imitating Prussian military traditions and getting a big kick out of the austere discipline.

If you're not sure of the teaching style, talk to the instructor outside of class. If it's an American instructor your input may be encouraged. Since Hapkido is a derivative of Aikido you may be required to "let go" and avoid resistance even though old-style Aikido was tough training.

Since you're there for the grade and not to learn self defense I would say go with the flow. I did the same thing with my required college PE class and just considered it an easy grade. He actually awarded me a higher belt rank and the rest of the class was awed with my skills. :D

Now I did speak up when confronted with a self defense move that was required for my rank test at one of the Kenpo schools I attended. The Instructor (one of 3 and not the head Instructor) kind of agreed but told me it was required for the rank test.

I've trained at 5 different places and I've seen questionable moves that I don't agree with at all of them. I don't make a big deal out of it though, I go with it for the ranking but focus on the stuff that suits me.

Why waste your, his, and everyone else's time with those silly self-defense classes when all you needed was a Ninja Hoodie?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wHIk7J8tRt0

Seriously- most self defense crap is crap- I'd go with Wookie's advice- if she's hot, let her win.

Here's the real secret (wrestlers do this)- train a couple select moves until you get them down real well. Work hard on endurance and strength training. Work out against a resisting opponent with the few moves that you've trained with initially. Drill, Rinse, and Repeat.

I agree with Oso.

Start easy and increase resistance as the skill level of your opponent increases.

Here are a couple of points:

In many real world encounters you would not allow your opponent the time to secure a firm grip.

In many real world encounters you would tenderize your opponent with a strike or kick.

Not every technique works with all opponents and under all circumstances. That does not make the technique not worth learning. Understanding the context is important.

Having said all that, I have "played" ;) with my partners in the past in order to deflate their superior attitudes or just to have fun with them because we are friends. They did the same to me. Also we always make the technique harder when we perceive the our "friend" opponent has attained a certain mastery at the level at which we are practicing.

It is usually best not to embarrass the instructor, but as long as you are willing to accept whatever consequences you may accrue it may not be inappropriate to mess with a superior acting classmate. Remember she probably didn't know your skill level so perhaps she thought she was helping.

Hey HT, HBD.

Just feel this one out....no, not the chick, my advice.

Talk to the real teacher. Talk to him about your background and your love for MA, and your concerns about the class.

Maybe, he might reach into his bag of tricks and give you something that isn't aimed at college chick novices.

Than again, he may say the class has nothing to offer you and you have to leave.

Either way...nothing ventured, nothing gained.

update.

some of my "skills" have been "exposed"

during todays "application training" i moved "too fluidly" for a "beginner" not to mention i was the only person able to drop to a proper "horse stance" when doing punching exercises

they also made the mistake of having us do "light contact" sparring meaning "stop your first a foot away from their face". i bobbed and weaved and no ones punches came near me.

Teachers assistant comes up to me "you're trained right". "yes". "in what?" "11 years kung fu and plus im a amateur kickboxer". she smiled nervously, and walked off to the locker room.

cute asian girl i was "light contact sparring" with. watches me move for the first second. "are you a boxer? don't hit me".

that girl is flexible as hell. during warm ups she was doing splits and putting her head on the floor. i was like...DAYYYYMMMMMMMNNNN
