guy walked into the gym like 5 minutes ago, happens all day of course, and we are running the Sept ads now. So, like anyone who walks into the school off the street, give him a schedule, offer him a free class and give him the rate sheet

Hey, this is NYC, this place is NOT cheap... and I offer like 40 classes a week in a full gym. But guy expresses the opinion that anything over $100 a month is way too expensive. That's fine, except that at that point we have nothing more to discuss. Those are my rates (and you aren't gonna find much cheaper in any decent NY school).

He then starts carrying on about his "last sifu" who taught twice a week in a basement in the Bronx. That guy only charged $50 a month

Well, $50 a month is fine and dandy when you teach an hour class twice a week in a basement... so I couldn't help myself, I asked him why he didn't just go back there? (and stop bothering me)

oh, he wasn't making any money, his wife thought his kung fu class was a waste of time and she made him get a second night job.... ;)

I'm one of the few BJJ/MMA guys who thinks contracts are not necessarily bad. The way I see it is this, the owner is promising to keep the doors open, the lights on, to keep a set schedule, to teach to the best of his abilities, etc. And all he asks is that the student sign a promise to compensate him for that.

FYI, I am against the 'McDojo' style ones. The ones with hidden fees, ridiculous time frame(like over 1 year), ironclad you can't get out of it contract types though.

Ross,

You have to understand that in America you're always going to get those types. Some will eventually join, as they're feeling out the entire process, not just you or your school. Others just have that fantasy and want to act or look as if they're going to join, only to always never find a reason enough to join. Sadly the latter group are the ones you see most on martial arts forums talking the most crap!:D

Go figure...

Yeah, and I'll bet you don't wear monk robes either. Obviously a big fake. ;)

Dave is a total fake: he eats dim sum with a fork, doesn't speak English with a Chinese accent, neither has been nor even claims to have been in a dim mak death match, and has the gall to expect that he should be actually able to "make a decent living" () teaching; if I didn't feel bad for him because of his cleft palette and speech impediment, I wouldn't give him the time of day...
