For those who think gracie jiu jitsu self defense is all on the ground

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZsZTLRY_4Y

for tournament fighting maybe the tactic is always to go to the ground (obviously), but for actual self defense the tactic is to get back to the feet.

Thinking BJJ has good standup is like thinking CMA has ground techniques. They might "have" it, but since they don't really practice it live, they don't really "have" it.

There was a point when GJJ, because it was so VT oriented, did indeed practice it, though not to the extend that they should have, I think that Carlson's BJJ was even more oriented towards VT.
Now, I think even GJJ is more sport BJJ oriented than VT, though they still do their MMA.

When I first read it I was thinking "Is he saying the the Gracies were training Ving Tsun?"

Helping others avoid the same stupid mistake.

Actually, we do - not the knife defenses and crap, but like defenses against strikes, bear hugs, etc. we don't spend *a lot* of time on it though. Not enough for me to say we are bjj self defense experts or some mess like that.

Most of the Gracie stand up self defense looks like Hapkido (or traditional Japanese Jiu Jitsu, no surpise). A lot of it is the same stuff that gets ragged on by MMA people, but in the case of the Gracie family, I think the attributes they develop rolling live (randori) allows them to pull much of it off

How often do you spar from these positions?

To pull most of that stuff off, one would have to be attacked by a 7-year-old school girl.

I still want my money back for all the class time I was forced to go through the dead motions of the crappy standing self-defense stuff.

That tactic for standing up was impressive, and parallels standups as presented in some BSL sets.

Now that, we do train on a regular basis. all of these takedowns are just judo though, so technically we do train them regularly, just not as self defense techniques.
