43 Year old 205 lb'er Randy Couture beats convincingly 270 lb 30 year old Tim Sylvia... must be the dim mak and wushu training he's now getting :p

I called this one weeks ago. A few guys kept telling me no way.. Tim's too big hits too hard, too tall, etc.
I knew this was stylistically a terrible matchup for Tim. Randy is an infighter and would spend the whole time staying inside Sylvia's power, either whacking him with hard punches, dominating him in the clinch, or putting him down.
Other than "the puncher's chance" I couldn't see any way that Sylvia could win this fight.
It will be interesting to see how Randy does against the other heavies. I think he'll have a harder time on some of the other guys...
Which is a shame, because Randy is a stud and IMO the standardbearer for the "new" breed of MMA fighter - strong base in something, with the brains to train/adapt and get better over time...

I've trained with randy, he's one of my favorites of all time, I didn't think he was gonna win, and especially not like this, dominated every aspect.... un f-ijn believable

yeah i just watched that too. i wasnt surprised that he won but i was surprised at how easy he made it look. TS is a power puncher and RC was smart enough not to block with his chin. good for him. he is definately the kind of person to look up to.

I just wanna know...
who's the boxing/muay thai coach that taught him how to bob, weave and counter like that?!?!?!?
He moved better than most pro boxers in the ring!!!
I'm stoked for the guy. Just like most people/announcers...I was afraid of him getting hurt, but wanted him to win.
A lotta heart, man.
Best,

Darn, I really wanted to see that fight.
I think this is a good example that if you train right and have good skill, you can be a great fighter well into your life.

No fuzzly, not true!
We all know that wrestling, BJJ, Boxing and Muay Thai are all for young guys because they emphasize brute strength and physical attributes, and only TCMA can keep you fighting well into your later years!!!! :D

I had the pleasure of watching Randy knock Sylvia on his arse live and in person. I was in Columbus for the Arnold, where I took second in mens black belt 35 - 45 yr. old point sparring as well. All the fights were great. Randy is da man.

who says the underdog never wins? everybody wanted randy to win but on paper the fight looked grim. did anyone see him loose to chuck liddell twice? maybe it's different because it was tim and they trained together in the past. but how many times does the old champ come out of retirement and take his belt back from the young guy? totally f-ing awsome!

Man I hope so. I will be there in 5yrs. And hopefully will be getting my black sash in my 3rd style. That's if my back and knees hold up. :( I sure as hell don't have Randy's conditioning.

Well, Arlovsky was in better shape, too. But Sylvia still beat him. Twice.

The question was.....what the hell was up with Babalu????
Was it just me or did he use the same crappy low-range knee entry all three times with horrible success on the first, bad success on the second and really bad success on the third:D

there's a guy who used to train at our school - WEC champ mike pyle. He spent some time in denmark teachin bjj at mikenta gym - a thai boxing school. He's been training with randy for a few years now. Randy even thanked him in one of his post fight interviews. I bet mike had something to do with it.

I think it was ommonus that so many top-notch fighters were being defeated the last half of last year. They'd gotten to the top by being fantastic technical fighters, then veared away from it. And then got thier bums handed to them.
I never had any doubt in Randy for this fight. Mind is 2/3rds of it and his is back in the game. Tim has never impressed me as being a technical fighter and against one of Randy's caliber....
