Hello Everyone,

Just got back from a long break, running all around Japan. :)

Been watching Sumo on TV almost every night, I'm particularly impressed with a Sumo called Asashoryu. Apart from showing great strength, he also showed great ability in "dissolving" the opponents, sometimes making them lose balance and throwing them off relatively easily using something similar to "Cai" or "Da Lu". At the moment, he had already won 8 bouts and only lost 1.

Cheers,
John

Interesting observation.

I too have noticed similarities in the applications used during Push-Hands and Sumo matches. Under a certain set of rules, Push-Hands, like Sumo, is a sport. In reality, Push-Hands and Sumo are both very effective methods for establishing superior position in combat. I think, as a sport and as self-defense, these arts teach us how to skillfully throw an opponent.

When I play Push-Hands, I test how well I understand the Tai Chi principles of softness that have developed through practicing the Form. I would imagine the same is true for Sumo wrestlers. For beginners, this type of training is really good. One reason is because it helps people understand that they are not as good as they think they are.

It also taught me if my mind is scattered I will be defeated. In addition, if my body constitution is not supple you will be lose my balance every time. These arts are great for developing the power of concentration.

Asashoyru came back after a very tricky tachiai yesterday. Its a tight field, but he could make his 20th tournament!

Where did you see it? I could only find some old bouts on youtube. I would love to watch the matches!

And Asashoryu wins his 20th tournament, putting him into a very elite group indeed!!!

Right on! I don't just admire his strength, but he has really good techniques as well.
