Yeah....that's what I thought too but I am still not sure what he means....it's such an incredibly specifically non Chinese kind of thing though. By example, let me share these pics from Xi'an:

Last year I was walking down the street with a friend of mine and he says, "Hey, check that out!", as he points across the street.

"Is that what I think it is?", I say as I look at the plant behind the wall. We stroll over for a closer look. "Yeah, I think it is!", as we head behing the wall to take another picture:

And then I lent the camera to my buddy for "the money shot":

Now that was last year. THIS year there is a plant in about the same place that is, I kid you not, about twice that size.....but it is so distant from Chinese culture that nobody even seems to know what it is.

Just for the record, the term in Chinese pinyin is "da ma" but I have in 6 years in China, yet to meet a single Chinese stoner. No cool street slang or other terminolgy to describe quality. The central Asians, Goby dessert people, smoke but it's nothing remarkable. There is a big hash trade in Beijing via east African immigrants but it's still not very good quality so, despite being both an ex-stoner and a fluent Chinese speaker, I really don't know how to translate the terms referenced. :o lol

The other day, one of the guys who work for me showed me that we had a big marijuana tree growing in my back yard. It was already knee height (almost 1m tall). I have three rastas working for me, and down here, just about every black guy who live in the township smokes the stuff. They must have spilled some seeds in my garden.

Either way, the stuff is pretty common down here, and from what I hear, we have some good stuff too. Names like Durban Poison and Transky Gold often pops up amongst avid wheat smokers.

Maybe that would be motivation enough for you to come down and visit us Ray pina. Maybe even hook up a fight or two for you ;)

If anything, I'd like to surf J-Bay. It's just the cold water and white sharks that kind of always seem to place it second to a tropical local. Maybe some day.

Thanks.... great pics:) Who would have guessed.

So how is that pronounced? Is it like Da Mo, but just Da Ma (mow)?

What are the laws like in China regarding growing a huge freaking bush of weed? Possession of a small amount, etc.?

My original purpose of asking is because I came across "hemp" in some Taoist literature.... seems like traditional Taoists were fond of it, and perhaps 'magic' mushrooms as well.

my mom has a house in J-bay. I dont get what the whole fuzz about the place is, maybe because Im not a surfer. Back on topic, you obviously know that Da Ma (in our country ge call it Dagga - pronounced Da- Ha like hua in putonghua) has a few good healing properties. Its widely used in african culture, and recently my mom used it for to counter the effects of chemo she got for brest cancer.

Same "da" (big) but the "ma" doesn't really sound like "mow". It is the same "a" sound as in "ah-hah!"

Have no idea about the laws. A "huge freakish bush"? Hm....that one in the pictures is only about half the size, no make that 1/3 of what is growing at curbside now. This years "bush" is more like a tree. It's got a two story brick building behind it and the top of the thing is in front of the doorway....on the second floor.

Don't feel like finding out about the legalities because regardless of what the law is, I am sure at least part of it includes deportation and I ain't going there. I've been too timid to even head over to the pot tree at night and scavenge it for anything smokeable. There's no obvious flowers. I see what looks like the begginings of something here and there but not even enough to tell what sex the tree is yet. *sigh*

There's apparently more of a pot culture down in Yunnan which makes sense since that's next to Viet Nam.

Da (大) - Big
Ma (麻) - Hemp

This is probably in contrast to the lower grade industrial hemp... maybe 'cause the buds are bigger?!?:D

It seems its traditional name (for contrast) as a medicinal is "Huo Ma" (fire hemp - probably a reference to the season of harvest) but Da Ma and Xian Ma have also been used.

Da Hua Da Ma - Big Bud Big Hemp... sounds good to me.

Xian (線) Ma - rope hemp - I'll pass, thank you - might use it for my ropedart, though.

Great pics.

What's ah-peen?
