It looks to me like the guy was defending himself. He was yanked out of his car and slammed against the hood. If I was on the jury I would have to say self-defense.

I strongly believe that one should have the right to defend him/herself if someone is trying to do that person harm. It doesn't necessarily have to be that the cop is trying to kill the person. I've heard some cases of policemen doing horrible things to people, not life threatening, but horrible. Are you saying people should just take it and pursue legal action later?

i agree with RD. the officer definitely didn't use much force at all and it stands to reason that the officer stopped the guy for more than speeding telling by the way the man viciously attacked him. the way he reacted tells me he coulda been on drugs. he might of been swerving around in the street or has gotten an APB for supsicious behavior. rational people dont usually react that way.

i was treated way more offensively than that, for simply walking. bottom line is though you dont attack an officer without da.mn good reason, and thats coming from someone who doesn't particularly like the few that i've come across. but i respect what they do.

and i actually do know how it feels to be in that situation. i've had my head bounced off a cruiser before because i was in the wrong place at the wrong time. i was completely innocent, but i wasn't angry at the officer after he appologized. he was mistaken and i figure that is a small price to pay for the security the police provide.

i agree with the assult thing. had it been something i persued who knows maybe i could have cost the guy his job or at least a few weeks pay. not interested though ... these guys have it hard enough as it is. people like to sit back and judge, but the fact is that most police officers are decent guys doing their best to keep the streets safe. but decent or not ... after you have been dealing with the bottom the barrel for so long its going to eventually take its toll on how you handle people. sure the force has its share off c0ck monkeys who get off on abusing the badge, but i really believe these guys are the exception and not the rule. most only use the force they believe is necessary but of course anyone can have a bad day. i know having a bad day isn't an excuse for doing a poor job, but i think id be even more afraid of a banker having a bad day than most cops ive met.

As someone who was a cop in D.C., Here is what I saw in the video. (And I admittedly have only the info in the tapes)

1. The driver was probably pulled over for DWB
2. There was no reason to pull him out of the car (although the hick cop did have the right)
3. I saw no reason for the patdown..
4. No one should be splayed out on the hood like that...in fact the police academy in D.C. teaches it is one of the worst position you could put someone.
5. When the retard cop picked up his gun he should have racked the slide in an attempt to clear the jam and fired again and again into that big bear of a man.

im a black kid living in new york. so i've seen my fair share of government sponsored abuse (lol we used to give our fair share of (verbal) abuse to officers too) and brutality in the news and in real life. every one of my friends has been in that similar situation of being manhandled and patted down without just cause. police officers suffer from the pitfalls that anyone with any authority over another person suffers from.. but they do alot of good, and they risk their lives to save people that they dont even know, and yes life would be alot sh!ttier without them.

i can be as anti-authoritarian as anyone else, but im not gonna turn my reason off and deny the reality that being a police officer would be alot more dangerous if people had free license to attack them after claiming their civil rights were violated or that they felt their "safety was in danger". how would you separate 1 honest claim from the dozen fraudulent ones?

believe me genuine abuse cases do come out in the news.
