(bored while I'm doing the laundry)
(start sarcasm, ie this is NOT serious)
1. Wang Lang: Created praying mantis by combining 17 different styles, the original jack of all trades, master of none
2. The Jow family, had the nerve to think Hung ga's footwork wasn't fast enough and combined it with Choy Ga. Never bothered to learn enough Hung ga to make it work!
3. The Kou family, major marketing scheme when they took Di Tang Men and made it Dai Sing Men. Then the made it "new and improved" by adding Pek Gwa! Heck, they even added some black tiger! Sell outs
4. Hung Hei Goon, couldn't cut it at the temple so he had to make up his own style, with his name on it, what ego! Ddn't get all the tiger so he just stuck some crane into it....
5. Wong Fei Hung, rode on his father's coattails, dropped the names of all the ten tigers, stuck his nose into other people's business
6. Ying Jow faan Jih Myuhn! Is it eagle claw or is it faan jih myuhn! Then they added wu style! What's going on with this madness
7. Chung Lai Cheung, do you realize the first few forms he teaches aren't even Bak Mei! No, really
8. Yang family, learned CHEN STYLE, then made big money off of it and put their name on it!
9. Hung Fut, what's with all these Hung ga wannabe's not being able to cut it in Hung? Had to combine it with Fut Ga, yeah, ok
10. Choy Lay Fut... multi level marketing scheme, they've set up three branches, they all have different forms, can't even agree who the CEO is!
(/sarcasm)
(a lot won't get this post)

How could youposibly forget about Sun Lu Tang?! After learning bits and pieces of 3 seperate styles and creating his own *******ized version of taiji, he actually had the nerve to further ca$h in with a multi-book deal! :p
Eh, what about Lama Paai?
Losing control of their brand - allowing it to splinter into Baak Hok and Hop Gar?
Good humourous thread. Keep going.

I dunno Coach Ross...
I've got the feeling you're making a larger point here....
Could it be, perhaps, about the necessity for critical thinking, innovation, and cross-pollination to keep arts alive? :D
That's pretty serious stuff.

At this point I need to remind you that, per Rorion's lawyers instructions, the words "Brazil" and "Jiu Jitsu" and the letter "J" and the sound "zoo" are all owned wholey by Rorion Gracie and can not be used without his express written permission :D

DAVE ROSS IS THE BIGGEST SELL OUT EVER. If you were truly a Jew, and you owned the word "JEW", you'd be asking me for a lot more than a dollar.

Maybe if he was selling "JEW-lery", but it does not apply to licensing. I know this first hand, as my mother was a Jew. I, by no fault of my own, became a 'pizza-bagel.'

I am surprise that Bruce Lee didn't make it to the top ten. But then technically, Bruce Lee is all American (at least his birth certificate said so). So JKD is not Chinese Kung Fu per se. Now Jun Fan Kung Fu on the other hand is somewhat Wing Chun which Yip Man alledgely had took other line of Wing Chun and some Yong Chun (ie Wooden Dummy) so... :D  Did Jun Fan Kung Fu sell out and became JKD, or is the all American boy sell out to Chinese Kung Fu? Now that's the question. :D
BTW, Wong Long took 17 styles is a bloody lie! :D ;)

I think this could be what kills the martial arts and is the death of a style actually...
Reply]
Does it kill martial arts? or make them stronger?
Does it Kill a style? or give birth to a new one?

this is what is called dialectic synchretism: it's a fancy term (and it's so nice to be able to use them now w/out unecessary commentary from the peanut gallery ;) ) for a process by which a style is learned as such, and then the student takes that style and others he's learned, breaks them down and reorganizes them; over time, that itself becomes a new style, and so on and so on (somewhere I remember reading an article on this, maybe on this forum, maybe elsewhere, whatever)
right now, we are in the phase of seeing this occur vis a vis BJJ, MT, SAMBO (BTW, anyone know what SAM-B-O actually stands for? a rubber chicken to the first correct answer) all being re-integrated into a new "style" called MMA...
oh and as for the biggest sellout: Jacques Derrida for ripping off Chuang Tzu; to wit (bold mine):
"Heaven and Earth were born at the same time I was, and the Ten Thousand things are one with me. (But if) we (are) already one,...how can I say anything? But I have just said that we are one, so how can I not be saying something? (My awareness of) (t)he one and what I said about it make two, and two and the original one make three. If we go on this way, then even the cleverest mathmatician can't tell where we'll end, much less an ordinary man. If by moving from nonbeing to being we get three, how far will we get if we move from being to being? Better not to move, but to let things be!"
Chuang Tzu - Basic Writings (Burton Watson, trans.), Section 2: Discussion on Making All Things Equal, p.38-39; est. date 500 B.C.E.
"Representation mingles with what it represents, to the point where...one thinks as if the represented were nothing more than the shadow or reflection of the representer...In this play of representation, the point of origin becomes ungraspable. There (is) an infinite reference from one to the other, but no longer a source...There is no longer a simple origin. For what is reflected is split in itself and...(t)he reflection, the image, splits what it doubles...What can look at itself is not one; and the law of the addition of the origin to its representation, of the thing to its image, is that one plus one makes at least three."
Jacques Derrida - Of Grammatology (Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, trans.), Part I: Writing before the Letter, p.36; 1974 C.E.
