MA are not really regulated or standardized and any hillbilly can start an organization and call it National or International.

that's why you have so many world champions in obscure little clubs in the middle of nowhere.

another thing worth noting about the laxness of it all is, have you ever noticed how many kungfu masters have all been the instructor for the chinese army? lol. It's like almost every kungfu guy over 60 instructed the Chinese army.

anyway, most organizations are barely state wide despite being called international and many will legitimize themselves as international by sending invites to tournaments to other countries. Even if no one shows, it is still held up as an international event.

as far as being in teh public eye goes, kungfu and martial arts in general suffer because it is just not something that interests the greater portion of the population.

Frankly, most people can care less about martial arts and so, you wind up having a lot of people making a lot of noise about themselves just to be heard in the din of everyone elses favourite distractions.

Two additional points to add to what David said:

1. Many organizations want numbers. So if you have a black belt in some art under 1 organization, there are probably 5 other organizations out that that will "certify" you in their organization under your martial art. There are even organizations out there that will certify you in the founder's system even if you dont study what he teaches!!

2. From a different perspective, consider the style that is being claimed. Karate, Kempo, Ju Jitsu....But what type of Karate? Shorin Ryu, kyokushin, goju ryu...? Ive seen many schools advertise they teach "Karate" when they in fact teach some American Tae Kwan Do. When I was a child I trained at a school called "Mile High Karate" but what they actually taught was Rhee TKD...
What kind of JJ? Aiki? Gaijin Ryu? Certainly not Brazilian I imagine...

Keep in mind that having credibility under an organization that doesnt seem..."serious" doesnt necessarily mean that this individual is a bad martial artist. If you are looking for instruction and this is the only option, Id still check it out. Just aproach it with a bit of apprehension...
