I was wondering if the gloves used in the UFC, for example, preclude the possibility of using your palm, fingers, or wrist to strike. Most of my really devastating blows are not just normal punches, so I was wondering if it was allowed and if it was possible to strike other than just by punching.

the gloves don't prevent it, but the rules might.

I like to strike with my palm and the back of my wrist/hand sometimes .... the gloves aren't an issue at all. And technically, you can even work a fu man choy in their too. As well as a ginger fist too. All possible with those gloves. Rules is something else. Don't know. But I think you could.

I just picked up pair of Pro strike contender [mma] gloves from Ringside.com on sale right now. they are great fingers open palm open. just enough padding across knuckles to keep from cutting your knuckles or your opponents face up.
Rule wise i dont think you'll be able to finger gouge your opponents eyes out.

snake and crane strikes rely on fingertips

gruevy snake and crane strikes rely on fingertips
Partially...that isnt all they strike with, or the only hand shape..even snake uses the whole hand and arm, crane uses all kinds of surfaces regardless of the hand shape

Palm strikes and Hammer fists are legal in most MMA. Pride for sure. One question though:
Why would you want to poke someone with your fingers in a "mystic pressure point" instead of smashing their face with your fist?
It just seems like common sense to punch back when someone is doing it to you. Besides, I have apprehensions about snake and crane strikes being more effective than a good ol' fashioned punch.

It's not necessarily striking magical death buttons, it's more like, with good finger strength, a crane student can pick individual ribs and break them, or dislocate a jaw. An accurate tiger or dragon claw can rip muscles apart from the bones they should be connected to. A palm is much easier to channel chi through for a video game type knock-em-head-over-heels punch than a fist is. That sort of thing.
All MMA that I have watched is nothing but slightly above-average boxing with some kicks thrown in, and your favorite variety of wrestling, and I was wondering if that's because the rules make it impossible to exercise some good old-fashioned artistry, or if it's because no one does it. I almost never see a decent wing chun punch block, for example, and that just boggles me.

this is too funny, no wonder other martial artist poke fun at kung fu. oh man this is hilarious!!! hahahahahaha
breaking ribs with crane and ripping muscles with tiger and dragon, hahahaha. how long have you been training in TMA? breaking ribs with fingers thats a new one, good luck, you ll break your fingers before you can break a rib. as for ripping muscles with your hands, ok sure you do that

Now Mr. gravy seems to be asking questions. Why jump all over him for his opinion? Maybe he will be the first one in the Octagon to make KF look good.
But, using UFC rules (which are pretty much the standard for MMA in the US), you cannot use your tiger or eagle claws to rip muscle. Clawing is a violation of the rules.
As for finger tip strikes to the ribs...well the ribs are stronger then your average finger strike, but if you have the conditioning, have at it. Just be aware, people break ribs in fight all the time, and it doesn't end the fights. So don't expet to break a rib and end the bout.
