I recently purchased "Roots and Branches of Wing Chun" by L. Ting, and it shows him demonstrating a section of the triangle poles kicking training. I just had a few questions to satisfy my curiousity and perhaps learn a thing or two. Did Leung Ting learn this training from one of his teachers or is this something he came up with on his own? Is there really an exact Saam Sing Chong form? I've heard of this type of training, but how common is it within the Yip Man Lineage? It looks like a good way to train kicking combinations and evasive footwork. Does anyone here train with the 3 poles method. This has probably been talked about before, but I thought I'd start a new thread.

By the way if you have the cash to spare, I highly recommend the book, if you can get past the typical L. Ting propaganda. It has pictures of Lun Kai demonstrating all 3 empty hand forms and the wooden dummy form of the pre-Hong Kong Yip Man style, as well as forms from many other lineages. Its just cool to see all the variations and may give you some insight into what you have learned. Peace to all.

I've heard about the Saam Sing Jong from other YMWC sifus, including Moy Yat. I don't know if there's any specific form though. I only remember seeing the 8 chain kicks used on it.

Augustine Fong teaches....or at least taught... several specific patterns of footwork/stepping to be done while standing on top of the plum blossom poles or moving between them on the ground. The Jong consists of 6 poles, not 3, set up as the central points of the petals of the "plum blossom." Its not a "form" per se, but a pattern for training none the less. This is also featured and covered quite well in Vol III (Mook Yan Joang and Mui Fa Joang) of Randy William's series of books.

Gary Lam's site shows him bangin' away on one, but by the setup, it does not appear that he does much footwork in between them.

-Maybe you can e-mail Gary (or Ernie) for specifics on how they train with them in the GL/WSL lineage.
