View Full Version : Had my first MMA fight

I had my first MMA fight saturday night and it was very exciting...I was doing pretty good standing up and should have made more of an effort to keep it standing but he got me down with a body lock...I put him in guard, should have held him there and waited for a standup, but I posted on his hip and went for an armbar...when I didn't get it I tried to transition to a triangle but when I didn't get that I lost guard and started eating some big shots...I bucked my hips as best I could but eventually he got me in a saran wrap and just unloaded...my other arm was sealed off by his leg...ref stoppage...

I was very happy that I finally fought MMA and it was really fun...I was happy with how my techniques and hip movement felt, I just got caught...I really cannot wait to fight MMA again but next I will probably do kuoshu in Wisconsin in May...

Way to go.

I think all of us here at KFM should chip in and buy you some real shorts, though. :D

Akhilleus
02-24-2005, 05:40 AM
LOL...I didn't have any shorts w/ me cause I just went to watch Sun Tzu fight...I filled in for some dude that didn't show...all I had was my bathing suit cause I thought maybe the hotel we stayed at would have a hot tub...still it could have been worse...what if I had a speedo?

Cool! And you posted pics, so no one can call BS :) What happened to your shin? That's a big lump!

Akhilleus
02-24-2005, 05:45 AM
I threw a leg kick and he checked it and we banged shins...didn't hurt at all while I was in there...all that adrenaline...but it started swelling up nicely after the fight...it's still pretty tender...but the bump has gone down...

Big props for filling in last minute and fighting. Well done.

you got taken down to the floor by a lowly MMA fighter? Lord, your kung fu is weak and fake :p :D

hey, congrats on having the intestinal fortitude to DO IT... the only loser is the guy sitting outside the ring talking about how "he'd have dun it bettah"

that's great!

I wouldn't have done that. I would have won it by ...

Just kidding. Good on you for getting in the ring and putting it on the line.

Nice going man. It takes some guts to hop in the ring with no notice. The other guy was probably training specifically for this fight for weeks.

You know I'm proud of yah bro, and happy you finally got the opportunity to try it out.

Very classy not mentioning the large weight advantage that guy had on you.

yer gonna be at least as big a monster in mma as you were in kuoshu.

Thank you my friends for all of the support...you guys are the best...next time I fight I will write "martial.best.vwh.net.forum" on my back (better start doing more pull-ups)...thanks coach Ross...that means a lot...

Roflmao! You should've put on some swimming goggles and cap and made it your cool wrestling persona! Aquaman!

LOL...yeah Aquaman would be better than Merman (from He-Man)...right?

But taking a fight on short notice has one benefit...it saves you at least a week of stress...I guess I fought based on the principle that "The show must go on", fans came to see a fight, and I know how hard these guys train so I didn't want some dude to do all that and then miss his fight cause his opponent was a no-show...but next time I fight I will be more ready than ever...I'm starting training next week...

Did you learn anything specific fighting this guy?

Can I claim title to being the no-show to get some ring cred?

Good job for getting into the ring. Where was the fight held in Richmond?

Akhilleus

Thanks 7*...
wdl:
I learned a couple of things...first, MMA is FUN...second I need to move around more to delay a tie up and then try harder not to let him throw me (of course, I didn't just let him throw me, but I tried to grapple him and throw him, next time I will try harder to just not get thrown myself)...third, although I wrestled back in school and have some experience in submissions, it is a whole nother ball game when you throw punches in there, more things to think about, more tiring...of course, we trained with punches, just not enough...fourth, getting punched on the ground isn't as bad as I had expected...fifth, MMA gloves don't do much if you are the guy getting punched...I could feel dude's knuckles on every punch...sixth, my downfall was when I went for a submission and didn't get it I had lost guard...so I'll be more careful in the future when going for submissions...I wish I had just held guard and tried for a stand up...

but most importantly to me, I realized why I am doing this...it's all for fun...you gotta enjoy it...I had forgotten how to enjoy it because before this I had been doing kung fu tournaments near my house in front of everyone I knew...at that point the goal was, "Don't make the org or myself look bad". But when I had that dude on top of me raining down punches...that was fun! And now that I've gotten my butt kicked, what is there to fear for next time? I can't wait to fight again! If you are worried about what other people think, you cannot really enjoy yourself...

Hey don't sweat it dude...there was some bad traffic on the way there...

Where was the fight held in Richmond?

It was called "the Show Place"...

the only loser is the guy sitting outside the ring talking about how "he'd have dun it bettah"

You mean how he would have struck the guy's temple with a crane's beak, monkey's paw, plus three other tales of mystery, suspense, and Horror? (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1894003071/qid=1109268963/sr=8-1/ref=pd_csp_1/002-0012866-6947206?v=glance&s=books&n=507846)

Very tough and classy, thinking about the other guy who trained.

I have to say though, I also noticed in the picture that that guy must have had what, at least 15 to 20 lbs on you?

Ford Prefect
02-24-2005, 08:23 PM
Akhilleus, way to go bro. Every loss is a learning experience. Having the balls to step into the ring is half the battle, and it gets easier every time. Keep up the good work.

Akhilleus
02-24-2005, 08:25 PM
Thanks Ray and Ford...yes I was giving up about 20 lbs...I was probably around 180 and he was over 200...but in a way that takes a lot of the pressure off of you, when there is a weight difference like that...cause you're the underdog...

Thanx NP and Saek San...now tell your guys to train because like crazy because I will be... :p

Oh and one more thing I learned that I forgot to mention...when they say no small joint manipulation in UFC and MMA they are just referring to fingers...so wristlocks are OK...I am going to work on my chin nas more...

BTW...can anyone tell me how long I should wait before doing any hard sparring? Like I said, I lost by ref stoppage b/c I couldn't defend but at no point did I feel hurt or in danger of getting KO'd...After my fight, I wasn't stunned or anything, but I did take some big shots during the fight, and until yesterday the sides of my head were maybe a little sore...but its all on the outside...I didn't have any headaches or anything after the fight...but like I said, I did get hit pretty hard a few times...and I want to err on the side of caution...

Thanks guys...

Was it just like "Hey, **** it, Ill fight"?

Yeah we were waiting around for the rules meeting and this dude is like is there anyone here that wants to fight...and I probably wouldn't have done it but I did get this kind of pensive look on my face and the guy was like "You look like you want to do it...do you?" So we talked about it and luckily everything fell into place...

I sure will...I think the next Combat Sports Challenge event is in Woodbridge...King of the Ring is in Virginia Beach I think...so I'm sure we will back around those parts soon...

My wounds...I don't normally look like this much of a maniac...I think it was a combination of the wounds/the close up of the picture...I mean I look downright scary in this pic...like Anthony Hopkins...or Anthony Perkins...
