View Full Version : Got my heavy bag hung in my apartment

I used an Everlast wood beam ceiling mount. It mounts a holder to a stud in the ceiling. It comes with 2 2" lag screws to mount it into the ceiling with, but I replaced them with 3" lag screws. Right now the chain a little long, but I can fix that later.
I have a question tho. I bought a 70lb Everlast nylon bag and one side of it is hard as hell. I almost broke my shin kicking it. The rest of the bag is nice, tho. Is there any way to fix this?
And yes, I'm going to take it down when it's not in use.

The mount.
Those other holes are from other things. I'm gonna patch them up soon.

" I bought a 70lb Everlast nylon bag and one side of it is hard as hell"
Yes...
Kick it out. It will make your shins hard as hell in turn. :)
Buy some good jow to get rid of the bruises.
... Or work them out with a baseball bat. When my shins hurt too bad from working the shin kicks on the bag, I use a heavy steel pipe to beat out the hard parts and continue working out.

Jeez, it would suck to be your upstairs neighbour!
Actually, it wouldn't. You could probably only do about 20 seconds a day before you got too winded to carry on. ;)
You barely notice it right in the middle of the passage through the room ;). Nice, though. Gives you an excuse to hit it every time you walk past.

it worked out good for you cause of this, but i ****ing hate top floor apartments cause of the heat in the winter. i remember living on the 3rd floor of an apartment building as a kid and having my air conditioner on in the middle of january.

Or you could just open a window :)
What I want to know is how the hell do I get bugs in my apartment on the 3rd floor???

u sure that thing is gonna hold it ?
IronFist
08-11-2004, 10:21 PM
It should. Obviously it needs to be in a stud. I mean Everlast sells that mount with an 80lb bag as a package, so my 70lb bag should be fine. Plus, I replaced the 2" lag screws with 3" ones, so it should hold.
Knock on wood.

you could probably get away with doubling the chain to raise it up a bit more.
people who visit you will think weird thoughts about you as they look up and wonder what the hook bracket is for. Fertively glancing about the room for meat saws and such...:p
should do for a while. It might loosen after a while and you'll have to move it up the stud or mount a bracket to the stud and mount the gear to the bracket.
anyway..

on the bugs in the 3rd floor point, I get the same, but flies in the middle of the room.
It's weird. Anyone know how to get rid of em? incense, fly paper? Something that doesn't smell would be great.

Iron ,
I don't wanna hear that thing falls down, but , everybody seems to make the same observations.
Back at my gym we installed steel wall mounts into concrete and usually thats good enough. but the ceiling in your home it's drywall that's really unstable .

IT'S BOLTED TO A STUD IN THE CEILING.
It's not being supported by drywall. Do you guys have me on ignore or something?

Yo Iron,
You really need to have a spring at the top of the bag to minimize the pull on the ceiling attachment.

It's supported by drywall?! You should really take it out of there and attach it to a stud in the ceiling, Iron.

A spring won't make the bag weigh any less. Can you please explain how a spring would lessen the pull?

Iron, you don't want to attach it to drywall, it will rip it out in no time.

You can get them online at everlast.com. Title Boxing also sells their own version. You should be able to find them in commercial sports stores. Well, at least you can get them here in the states. It's portable enough that if you unscrew two screws you can remove it. As for ceiling damage, you'll have two holes in your ceiling. I would recommend a stud finder to go along with it so you can be sure where to hang it.

i think he's saying the spring would absorb some of the shock making it less of a burden on the actual stud.
im not sure, but i also think some of the others meant that all the action on the stud could make the dry wall fall around it. whether or not that would happen im not sure, but either they meant that or they might have you on ignore or something. ill ask them for ya.

cheers, I'll check it out ( everlast.com) when I arrive in Beijing.
Careful. I wanted a swivel from Everlast (Title). Cost was US$20 or so. Postage was US$55 to Oz. They didn't tell me that until after I'd given my credit card details and placed an order. Needless to say I cancelled my order.

This thread made me laugh.
And thanks for the advice about the flies GDA but I don't think the lampshade would take it.
GunnedDownAtrocity

im sure it would be fine. just place some fire in direct contact with the lamp and go make a sandwich or something while it does it's thing. come back in 10 or 15 minutes and the flies will be gone guranteed.

Hi IronFist,
Using a spring will soften the jerking action on the chain that is caused by the impact of blows. The spring will absorb the shock and help msintain the integrity of the ceiling mount.

I see. Thanks for the explanation :)
funniest thread in a while.
IF, mickey is right, get a spring. It will make it last longer but I have to throw my 12+ years of building maintence out there and say that if you train on that bag as it is mounted then you will indeed **** up the drywall around the mount and eventually (6 months or so) the lags will have come loose in the stud.
since you are putting holes in your ceiling anyway:
get a SYP (southern yellow pine) 2x12, if you can't find that then a pressure treated board will do. don't use spruce as it is to soft.
a nice bit of oak or maple would work too if you want to get fancy.
locate TWO rafters (studs technically being in the wall) and cut the 2x12 to span the distance between them and a little more.
Mount the 2x12 to the ceiling and rafters w/ 3-4 lags through the 2x12 and into the rafters.
Then attache the bag mount to the center of the 2x12 using carriage bolts instead of lags and get a spring as well.

You should really take that thing out of the drywall and put in in a stud. Just my advice...
