It's most annoying when two magazines come out with the same cover. Check out your newsstands this month. Here's Shambala Sun (http://www.shambhalasun.com/Archives/Features/2004/September/index.htm) and here's Kung Fu Tai Chi (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/magazine/article.php?article=531). ****! Well, at least it's not another martial arts magazine....

But we're best buddies. Our prime minister bites the pillow whenever Bush whistles. Our brave and loyal servicemen are dying in Iraq to further US foreign policy (and they've not even been shot by the Americans by mistake lately). We've alienated our closest neighbours to support our American buddies

I make frequent use of the terms Yank and Nadian.
:)
Edit: More often than yank, I will say "sissy northerners" or "Soft ass northerners".

I think Tak is about to get my vote for king of conspiracy theorists, and that's saying alot on this forum :D

Press release photography will get ya everytime. You should demand exclusives. I have to say though, the other mag did a good job of zooming in.
No big deal. But I could imagine the edit meeting when this broke.

Jet's much bigger than martial arts magazines now. The last exclusive I can remember him doing was the one he did for IKF where he just showed up in sweats. I'm told he's on the cover of Men's Health now too.
Actually we were pretty amused by it, especially when you contrast the stories. I think it might actually help our newsstand since most martial artists don't read Shamballa Sun, but a few Shamballa Sun readers might be interested in a little more martial arts than what was in their cover story. So maybe they'll come to us. At least, that's what I hope. :)
You don't vote for kings!
On the other hand, if you want to lob a scimitar at me...

You guys do a great job.
As an outside editor I would say you guys have better content on a regular basis but your competitor’s cover and the way they lay out the book is more eye friendly. I’ve often wondered why you guys haven’t gone to that glossier, firmer look and cleaned up the inside with a redesign.
I also have some neat money-making ideas like a Top 10 (20, 30, 50) Products of the Year issue sponsored by the winners of course ... platinum sponsors get write ups and full-age adds, gold sponsors get full pagers, silver half pages and bronze quart pagers. You have some cool potential for all types of inserts, too.

I wouldn't mind a valuable insert ... say of folding knives and inexpensive wood dummies ... or of good fight gear ... all types of gloves (5 oz to 12 oz), head gear, shin pads, ect.

Yeah, Gigi and her husband founded Tiger Claw (originally Pioneer Interstate) to promote their gear. Eventually they bought the magazine from Pacific Rim (Roger Hagood), which is why you don't see ads for other equipment brands in KFTC magazine.

Oh Oh Oh!
I do browse Buddhist and Christian periodicals.
Discussion of Mind and body is all right.
But a sword in hand is a different story.
Why not post a G.I, with a laser guided M-16A, infrared goggle, satelite uplink video, audio feeds in camoflage fatigues.
A soldier has a soul.
An assasin has a soul.
Is it about the story or the person?

Gene Ching is really Winnie the Pooh. OK, that's a fair cop. I've been lifting that line from Pooh bear for some time now, since my kid has been into it. Ever read the Tao of Pooh? Actually, as A.A. Milne spirit animals go, I relate most to Eeyore. That and Heffalumps and Woozles. That's a great hallucinatory piece of animation - heffalumps and woozles - although derivative of one of my all time favs, pink elephants from Dumbo. OK, enough already? My Pooh fu is strong. I have a kid.
MK is right, although the company was founded by Thomas Oh and Gigi wasn't really a part of it at first. She was this award winnning real estate agent. It wasn't until the merger of Pioneer Interstate (Tiger Claw) with Pacific Rim (Hagood) that Gigi became invovled with the company. Like Tai Chi and Qi magazines, we're funded primarily by our own product sales. Interestingly enough, IKF started out the same way, but eventually abandoned product sales, save videos and books, so they could let outside advertisers in. I doubt we'd ever do that. It limits the kind of ads we do since we won't advertise our competitors, but it also gives us a lot more journalistic freedom since we don't have to cater to outside ads. EF, you're thinking about a martial arts mag like other mags. Inserts are really expensive and would require outside advertisers to throw down a lot of money. That money doesn't exist in the martial arts like it does in say, golf or ski equipment. As for layout, we have our style and they have theirs. We're constantly refining our design, but I doubt we'll go the direction of some of the other mags, simply because it isn't as graphically informative. We're a little edgy-er with our layout and I hope we always remain so.
now where's my honey?
