Hey there! I am going to be moving to Hangzhou, China in the late winter to teach English for a few years. Now, I have been practicing Kung Fu (mainly Hung Gar and Wing Chun) for two years and have no intention of ceasing to train - especially not since I will be in China!

My Sifu however will not be in Hangzhou and so I will need to locate a kwoon in Hangzhou to train at. I am interested in seeing what forms of Kung Fu are regularly practiced. I have been reading online and have found considerable information regarding Taiji Quan (but that is ubiquitous through China) and Yiquan. I also have read some references to Baji Quan being practiced in Hangzhou but have little confirmation of that, just an isolated reference to a demonstration.

Anyway, I wondered if anyone on this forum knew what styles of Kung Fu were common to Hangzhou?

Go to the Zhejiang University Physical Education Dept if you can. The head of the dept (to my last knowledge) is named Ji Jian cheng. I studied Xingyi under him briefly while he was here in the States.

He studied several Southern styles from Fujian as well as Baji Quan for 10 years in Hebei. His Bagua & Xingyi teachers were both students of the Sun Lu tang lineage & possibly studied under Sun himself.

Thank you both for your replies.

Since reading about them in <Chuckle> Kung Fu Magazine, Baji Quan and Xingyi were two styles that interest me. At my current Kwoon, Master Chau teaches Bagua to some of the most advanced students and I have also been interested in it.

I have been a student of Master Ji Jian Cheng since 1991 and cannot reccomend him enough. He is the senior proffessor of martial arts at Zhejiang University, very open highy skilled and a generous teacher. You will not find a better starting point

Good luck, you will love Hangzhou, beautifle place, try Kanna's bar good drinks and excellent hosts. You will find a very nice Taosit temple with resident priests if you look not far from Yueh Fei temple
