Dave says:
It's only a matter of which generation it happens to. A occurance of natural disaster of uncommonly large size has been due for a while. We experience many "mini" disasters, but still 1000's of lives are effected.
The Quakes in LA not so long ago is a good example, or the wildfires all across the west coast of the continent or any number of other events.
A rock from space is not so far fetched and volcanic collapse is a matter of record. Pyroplastic surges from Volcanos occur. Remember when Pinotubo went off in the fil? That effected the planet noticably for about 3 years. the summer was terrible that year cold and rainy.
The polar extremes are melting even now. If the ice fields that sit above land melt rapidly enough the world water level will rise because that ice, which is in some areas more than a mile thick does not currently displace any water on the planet. But when it melts...and it will, then it will displace huge volumes of water and coastal regions will feel the dire effect of that.
Geologically speaking, the human lifespan is miniscule. So, as a trait of our being, direct experience being a true river of knowledge does not happen in regards to these huge events often enough for us to really be concerned with them.
think of the children!!!
D@mn you rocks from space!!!!

Some say the end is near.
Some say we'll see armageddon soon.
I certainly hope we will.

The only way to fix it is to flush it all away.

The only way to fix it is to flush it all away.
Any ****ing time. Any ****ing day.
Learn to swim, I'll see you down in Arizona bay.
Some say a comet will fall from the sky.
Followed by meteor showers and tidal waves.
Followed by faultlines that cannot sit still.
Followed by millions of dumbfounded dip****s.
Some say the end is near.
Some say we'll see armageddon soon.
I certainly hope we will cuz
I sure could use a vacation from this

i heard about that a couple years ago on the discovery channel.
the thing about the discovery channel is that they will approach you with some completely off the wall idea and batter you with logic and evidence of why it could really happen. then when they have you at least considering it they bring in some other guy who completely destroys what the first guy said. they go back and forth for a half hour and in the end you didn't learn a got ****ed thing.

Definately. There are prophecies about such things too, such as the hopi prophecy, and religious prophecies. But watch out for things like stem cell stuff, and things like that too.
...and then you investigate their evidence and realize that at least 75% of it is unfounded bull****...

I saw a study that supposedly supported the premise of a landslide causing a giant wave. Initially it seems quite frightening but after some thought maybe not so much. the model they used was a scaled device used to study waves and thermodynamics. I think the problem with this study however is that the bottom of the model is entirely flat. The bottom of the ocean is anything but. the wave would expand where the bottom drops out and would rebound against itself when it would hit angled and vertical surfaces. In addition there are deep water currents that could distort the waves further.
In addition large waves we mostly know of now are caused primarily by winds not by land movement. Although studies given near overwhelming evidence that underwater earthquakes have caused tsunamis.
Also such large waves would break further out to sea than normal shore breaks. The result would still be water rushing in much ****her than normal but not in the form of some giant cresting open faced wave that would just crash down on everything.
Anyway, I'll just be watching the news and looking for Laird Hamilton on his hydrofoil surfboard riding a 200 foot tsunami.
