I called Wei Xiaotang's famous student Zuo Xianfu, the man in charge of 8 Step in Taiwan, to ask some questions about GM Wei's history.
Zuo Xianfu was happy to answer my questions and we had a productive conversation.

The two main questions of mine were:
1. Were the sonnets of 8 STep Mantis written by GM Wei?
2. How many shrfu's did he have?

The sonnets of 8 Step Mantis were definetly penned by GM Wei himself.
These sonnets speak of fighting, theory forms and GM Wei's personal history.

About his shrfu.
GM Wei had one and he is the well known Feng Huanyi.

In GM Wei's sonnet of visiting other MArtists, I previously took it to mean that those he visited were his teachers. This was a mistake on my part.

In his sonnet of visiting friends the first name he mentions is Yuan Jindong.
Zuo Xianfu recalled that over the years as GM Wei taught in Taipei he would talk of his meeting with Yuan Jindong.
GM Wei was only 23 when he crossed hands with this master and he was soundly defeated.

Master Zuo was quick to point out that at the time GM Wei was only 23 and his skills had not fully ripened.
Part of his "ripening" process was visiting other MA schools to test his skills against other masters and this he did many times.

He kept himself fit and healthy through a constant diet of practice. Into his 60's he was still performoing the difficult ditang moves that are characteristic of some of the 8 Step Zhai Yao sets.

Zuo Xianfu has recently republished GM Wei's original works.
When his 2nd and 3rd books were first published they were only available directly from GM Wei himself.
Master Zuo has reproduced that rare material so that it is now available in Taiwan bookstores.

The following is from chapter 18 1st section of zhai yao.
I have made a rough translation of the first four sonnets, each sonnet corresponds to a move of the form.

If I, or someone else, were to actually sit down with Master Zuo and go over the underlying meaning of each move we could produce a much better translation. For now this will have to do.

1.
The jin of plucking hand advancing step is not light,
The rear hand follows as the front hand attacks,
A single ying and a single yang to seperate the front and rear,
The jin of the second fist is yet more forceful.

2.
The waist is relaxed as the second fist comes out,
The jin of the whole body emanates from below the feet,
One moment empty one moment real keep the mind stable,
The jin released from the waist is not light.

3.
Pluck, cleave and smash to the gate of the opponent's face,
Follow with the dragging hand and crushing fist,
Then come the two dispelling hands and door closing kick,
With the uprooting step and fleeing jump the hands shut the door.

4.
The fifth technique is crushing fist,
When my opponent sees it he will have to dodge,
If he blocks and seeks escape,
He will find it difficult to avoid my sixth technique; the door shutting kick.

With the understanding that your Shifu studied with GM Wei, could he not answer these questions? Has Master Shi shared with you any insightful details of GM Wei`s fighting prowess? I enjoyed visiting the Ba Bu web-site, thank you for the info.
