Anyone going this weekend (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/news/index.php?month=06&year=2004)? I'm scheduled to be arrive off a red-eye Friday morning and I'll be there until Sunday. If you're going, Tiger Claw (http://www.tigerclaw.com) will have a table and you can meet em there. Remember, forum members can pose for a photo in the mag ;)

Well, this wasn't very popular here last year, but we'll see if that has changed. Anyone going this year? (http://www.americansocietyofinternalarts.org/events/festivalexpo/festivalexpo.html) I have a serious red-eye flight on Thursday and will be there by Friday (what is it with ZSF and the red-eye flights?)

That photo is three years old. I sent them a new one in an actual martial arts pose, but they didn't use it. I guess the pose sucked. :o As for my hair, it was cut right after that pic was taken, but it's grown out since. I'm going for a sort of disheveled Ronin look now, partly out of office political protest, but mostly out of general sloppiness. I've been hoping it grows out so I can tie it up like in an old Shaw Brothers movie soon, but I might not make it.

Well, that red-eye, I barely slept. My eyes were closed for about three hours, but I was still not really sleeping. Friday and Saturday I wound up drinking with Master David Chin's Hop Gar guys, John Painter, Gary Torres, Jim Donally and a few other assorted characters, and only got about 3 hours sleep those nights. Then last night, my flight was delayed and I wound up stranded in Phoenix for a few hours. I think I got four hours last night. I wa feeling ok until after lunch. Now I'm sleepy.
Didn't see a single person from the forum, or at least I didn't realize if I did, but lots of magazine fans. It was fun.

Well, it's that time of year again. I'm cathing an early morning flight on Friday and should be at the Zhang San Feng Festival and Tao of Health Expo (http://www.taichifest.com/) by the evening. I'm meeting two Tiger Claw operatives, Rand Cardwell, author of The Western Bubishi (http://www.martialartsmart.net/bcntprc001.html) and someone named Chris from the TN warehouse. As always, if you're from the forum, do check in with me. We aren't doing the forum members shots anymore, but it's always nice to meet people in the flesh. Hope to see you out there!

neilhytholt, that picture is now four years old. Since then, I've cut my hair and regrown it. Now it's a lionlike mane and I've got the evil kung fu villian goatee to match (I had the fu manchu moustache going for a spell, but I had to shave it when my seasonal allergies hit). Strange but true, I was voted "Most likely to star as a villain in a kung fu movie" by Teri Hatcher. Well, that's not really true, I was voted that by my graduating High School class and Teri was in my class, but I think she might have taken the equivalency exit exam to pursue modelling, and even if she didn't I don't know if she voted for me in that role. Nevertheless, I feel that my present position is fulfillment of High School prophesy.
I look forward to meeting you too, Dale Dugas. See you Sunday!

I had caught a slight cold on Tuesday, exacerbated by some allergy meds I'm on, and by the time I had to board the plane on Friday, I was sick as a dog. I'm sure my airplane neighbors (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/ezine/article.php?article=619) loved my coughing fits. Anyway, the 2nd leg of my Oakland>Dallas>Newark flight, got cancelled and I got rerouted through O'hare, where I experienced two flight delays. A 9-hour in-transit expanded to a 15 hour nigthmare and by the time I arrived, my cough sounded like a barking walrus after a harsh crack hit. I coughed so hard that I popped a blood vessal in my eye (and old injury from a finger jab I took sparring in High School, beleive it or not). Not good for any event for me, because I have to do a lot of talking and it's hard to have a conversation that way. Plus I was scheduled to do two workshops, one on writing (where I had to talk a lot, of course, thank God for microphones) and one on Xingyi sword (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=40481). The Xingyi sword one was at the end, and I was pretty exhausted. My Tiger Claw cohorts, Rand Cardwell (http://www.martialartsmart.net/bcntprc001.html) and Chris Peanut-Butter-Train, were loading out when I finished, and we took off immediately after but I did get to shake hands with the man, the myth, Dale Dugas on my way out. Dale, I wish we could have talked a little longer, but I'm glad we at least touched base.
Anyway, you'll be able to read my 'official' review in our next issue going into production, the NOV/DEC 2006. Until next year....

I will definintely be participating in your workshops, I have always been curious about these types of trainings but have never had the chance to train in them. I will be definintely looking for your table when I am there and also look forward to meeting you. My leave chit for the Navy has already been approved so I will get to stay for the post week also. Jake: I study xingyi with Tony Chen. Nowadays, I focus on xingyi sword mostly.
Joshua: We've announce the new videos in our May June issue which is currently at press. That issue will be on stand in the beginning of April so those videos will be available at that time. We are releasing four xingyi DVDs: 5 Element Staff & Spear, 5 Element Sword, 12 Animal Staff & Spear and 12 Animal Sword. These are all under the auspices of Grandmaster Liang Shou-yu and feature Helen Liang, Tony Chen and He Tao. I was just looking at one of the near-to-final versions of the 12 Animal sword DVD.

So maybe he's only 75 ;). Sun Cunzhou died in '63 so that's a little more feasible.
I studied with Sun Jianyun, who died in 2003. I used to credit her in my martial vitae. In fact, if you look at some of the Zhang San Feng Festival programs when I first attended, I list her. I figured she'd be a good one to credit in for that festival. But in truth, I only studied with her for a very short time. I took a few private lessons when in Beijing in '96, and then took a group lesson in '98 (which was actually in xingyi with her student while she was supervising, and I was really sick with Mao's revenge, so that barely counts). Sun style has totally fallen out of my practice and I'd be hard put to remember the pattern of the form now, so I've stopped listing her. At first, I felt it was good to list her just so her name was more exposed, but after a while, I felt it was doing her a great disservice since I'm not a very good example of Sun style anymore.
Ironically, when my own master Shi Decheng was out here last month (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=44742), we had a discussion about how students credit him as their master. He was amused that one of his disciples from China now doesn't claim him to be his master anymore, due to political reasons. He was also amused that so many students in the west claim him as their master, a lot of people who he doesn't even know or remember. He thought the whole thing was rather amusing, but he's pretty laid back about that sort of thing.

I don't study Tai Chi but looking at it logically..it seems pretty far fetched.
Ethically..it reminds me of what my sifu tells me about instructors taking a couple of lessons or their picture taken at a seminar with a legendary instructor and then opens a school and claims they are a "lifelong" student/disciple..or worse yet..a closed door disciple that noone seems to be able to verify.
A certain Wing Chun master who likes to use self agrandizing titles has been known to spin some yarns..ahem!
Back to this instructors webpage..I don't know of Lao Kim or Johnny Chooten..but don't most sifus study under their own teacher and not 2 teachers above their instructor at the same time?
Seems sketchy to me. And if he's only paying homage..he does not represent his training that way...

Gene, It is a shame that you have forgotten your Sun Style forms. Having a teacher of the magnitude of Sun Jianyun, even for only a short while is a great honor and you should reconsider renewing your original interest in Sun Style Tai Chi.
Gene and Erasmus, Jan Miller's Tai Chi Instructor was not Sun Lu Tang, but a classmate and close friend of mine. We both studied with Sun ShuRong the 2nd daughter of Sun Cun Zhou the 2nd son of Sun Lu Tang back in the late 70's in the capital city of Kaifeng in Henan Province. Sun Style was almost unheard of in Henan Province as Shaolin Kung Fu and Chen Family Style Tai Chi was most popular. When Shifu Chang went to live in America he spoke very highly of his private student Jan Miller whom he taught Sun Style. It is my understanding that his Tai Chi skills are quite good and is more than qualified to teach Sun Family Style Tai Chi Chuan. I also viewed his website link posted in this posting and it is very obvious to me that he is paying respect and homage to his lineage in Sun Style and not making any claims to have studied with Sun Lu Tang.
GeneChing
05-31-2007, 09:52 AM
To be honest, I never got that much out of Sun style personally. I first studied it under Paul Tam, and then Wing Lam, and then with Sun Jianyun in Beijing. When WLE was just started, the whole company (all four of us) used to do the traditional Sun form as a work break every day. That was great. I was active in the Sun Style Research Institute when Tam and Lam founded it over a decade ago. Back then, I did a lot of work to promote Sun style here. At that time, no one was really coming out with Sun style in America.
Tam, Lam and Sun are all great teachers. Sun has passed away (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/ezine/article.php?article=416) now of course, but she was phenomenally inspiring to me. However, like with so many practices, I moved on. I revisited it a few times after I started studying xingyi, and it made a lot more sense than before. But for me personally, if I'm going to do some taiji, I'll probably recite Yang before Sun now. That's just my personal preference, and it may change in years to come.
I've had many great teachers, san tong bei. How else would I get to where I am now? I hope to have many more. Perhaps you might see my abandoning of Sun style as shameful, but that's because you are entrenching within the Sun family. Given my position, I cannot be so attached. I'm on a mission to promote CMA - all CMA. Sun is only one facet of it. Sun stylists might view my leaving the system as disrespectful - I'm certainly not proud of that - but to me, it's even more disrespectful if I'm not open to the wealth of other great masters there are in the world.
OK, enough of that. See some of you tomorrow at ZSF!

05-31-2007, 11:21 AM
Gene, In no way did I mean to imply that you should be shameful for leaving the Sun Style, and in no way did I mean that by doing so you were disrespectful in any matter, must be my english, I meant no offense and hope you can believe that. I do understand why people can learn something and move on, when I learned Yang Style it just did not fit me well and when I learned Chen Style, it felt more right, when I studied Sun Style I knew I had found something worth my time and energy. I thnk you have to search till you find what fits and then give it the attention it deserves. I'm am so sorry if I did not explain myself well and you had bad feelings, it was not my intention and I salute your efforts to promote the Sun Style Tai Chi Chuan and all of the CMA.

The Sun Taiji Research Institute was founded under the auspices of Sun Jianyun. I think her original intention was to promote Sun style in America. She set up similar institutes in Japan, Hong Kong and in the PRC. She gave her blessing to Paul Tam and Wing Lam to start the institute, sending along a very unusual taiji banner as a blessing. It was this folk craft banner which looked like a macramé rug. We hung it up at Lam Kwoon. The main people involved beyond the Tam and Lam were Lam's top taiji students. The group was announced in Wing Lam's catalog newsletter and in some martial arts mags (in fact, if I bother to dig for it, I think it was announced in Kung Fu Tai Chi).
Since then, Paul Tam disappeared from the group. All of Lam's students that were involved have moved on. He has closed his school doors to the public, but still leads Sun style workout sessions with a private group. To the best of my knowledge, no one is doing anything with it anymore.
The institute were among the first to promote Sun style in America. Wing Lam offered GM Sun's book and official pin, proceeds going directly to her, of course. He also produced his own videos on the topic and cooperated with GM Sun to make a diagram poster, which was a very popular item. Additionally, there was a project to raise funds towards Sun Lutang's memorial grave site. I wrote a few articles on Sun style. In fact, my very first article for Kung Fu Tai Chi was Radical Taiji: The Rising Sun of Taiji (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/magazine/article.php?article=419) in our Dec/Jan '97 issue (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/magazine/article.php?article=64). Beyond Dan Miller's and Tim Cartmell's work with Pa Kua Chang Journal, et. al, not many others were discussing Sun at the time. Now that the genie is out of the bottle, so to speak, it's fairly accessible, far more than before, and I like to think the Institute had a significant hand in that.

I have no clue why Sun taiji and Bagua are not more popular here in the west!!?!??! Great styles!
Yeah Wing Lam has done some things to help spread the art, but in all honesty the poster and vid's are embarrasingly bad! :( The apps DVD was one of the worst things I have ever seen. I have heard he is much better in person, put things wrong on DVD on purpose etc. not sure what the truth is, but I sincerely hope his understanding of apps is better than the DVD!
Nice article. Thanks for sharing.

It was great seeing Dale and Joshua again. Dale said he'd post some pics. I'm hoping for the one of him in the skirt. Anyway, more to come on that...
As for embarrassment, if there's anyone to blame for Wing Lam's poor Sun applications, it's probably me. I pushed him to show applications just like I push everyone to show applications. Personally, I think his production of the videos was premature. There was a lot of pressure on him to produce the Sun videos. At that time, nobody had them (this predates VCDs). The only one that was available was Aiping Cheng's Sun compulsory (http://www.martialartsmart.net/tc-bj004c.html). Whether the pressure came from Sun Jianyun, Wing Lam's ex-wife, his students, the demands of the market or his own need to challenge himself, well, I can't really say. I personally don't think Wing Lam ever intentionally committed wrong things on video purposely. That's way too premeditated (although I will grant that he had a surprising sense of humor about such things). The WLE video production company was a grindhouse - we cranked out so many videos so quickly. Some are definitely flawed. But taken as a whole, it's still a hell of a lot better than the bulk of what's out on the market, especially over a decade ago.
One reason Sun taiji and Bagua are not more popular in America is the traditional students themselves. We don't allow for mediocrity. Either you're a master or you're not. Compare to golf, arguably one of the biggest money sports in the U.S. There's plenty of pros. There's a pro at every course. These guys aren't playing at the Masters. They aren't even close. But they are competent and they make their living teaching. There's no question of their skills and no baggage of being a 'master'.
In CMA, if you put yourself out there and haven't mastered it (or are just from a different school of thought), the traditionalists won't give you much slack. It's a personality quirk of TCMA. We're always looking for flaws. It's a natural characteristic of a strategist. But what exacerbates this is that so many people attack those flaws egotistically, as in 'that sucks'. The message the newbie gets is that everything sucks. Just look at this forum. The message we should be sending is that it's ok to suck. We all suck at the beginning, and most of us suck through to the end.
Which brings us back to the Zhang San Feng Festival. One of the unique things about this event is that it is very supportive of beginners and intermediates, no matter how much they suck. Ok, over to Dale and his pics in a skirt...

The second photo is Gene and my fu brothers Yancy Orchard(on Gene's right) and Bob Maio who is on my left.
Had a great time teaching Iron Palm and Iron Vest to over 75 people that weekend!!
Enjoy!!
Nice !!
Good work Dale, glad to see you had such a good time.

I should comment that Dale's classes looked pretty good, especially in the nice sports facility. My 5 Elements Xingyi Staff & Spear (http://www.martialartsmart.net/dvd-lh005.html) was in the old gym which had this whiny air conditioner simulator that only made the room stuffier. We moved outside where it was much cooler, especially when it started to rain. I told the whole class that when they should point their spears towards heaven when the lightning started.
I must refute Dale's 'cute legs' comment. Next year, Dale, you must join us for night training....

My wife calls them cute when in actuality I have really large/hairy scary fishwhite legs as I do not go out in the sun much....
I look forward to night training next year, brother.
Should be a blast. At least I would get some sleep on those nasty plastic coated mattresses that are as wide as I am...Uggh.
Sorry to hear about the whiny AC. I totally lucked out in the gym, though I had to yell as my voice disappeared into the rafters. It was good. Lots of people are buying my medicines onine and I have a bunch of people waiting eagerly for my Iron Palm DVD. Anyone interested can visit my website for more information.

Jake,
I bought the Miao Dao from Shifu John Lee who owns and operates International Traders Group.
His website is: http://www.itg8.com/
All teak handles and the thing is well balanced.
Dr. Painter has shown me some weapons concepts but not for the Miao Dao, for me its a lighter weapon then my HUGE bagua dao to work with in speed as well as holding it out and walking the circle to get my qi to the end of it.
Glad you liked it!
The festival is a nice little affair. I was amazed at how many people came up to me at my booth. But then again I was wearing a kilt and hitting a steel shot iron palm bag....:D:D:D:D:D:D

There were over 400 people signed up for the festival. Not bad when the year before there were not that many.
Our own Jiulong Gathering of the Circle was up 20 people from last year, we had over 50 people training with us for a week. That is not bad at all. This year seemed to be good to get people to come out and train!!
Ill be teaching a dit da for martial artists next year as well as tapping for health.
Be well,

Just because other people aren't going is no reason to stop you from going. What if everyone took that attitude? No one would ever get to see Dale in his skirt....err..kilt. Wait, that's not enticing. Not at all. Never mind that. Moving on...
The Zhang San Feng Festival is very unique because it's just internal arts and there's no tournament. Seminar gatherings exist in the open martial arts world, but not so much in the CMA world, and even less so in the Internal Arts. This is one reason why we've supported the ZSF so much. At 400 people, it's still fairly intimate and that's nice.
Jake, if I can do seminars there, you surely could. If you're interested, I'd be happy to put in a word for you with the promoters the Donnellys. They are always looking for new talent. I'm sure Dale would too. Dale was one of the belles of the ball this year, not just because of his dress...err..kilt, but because he was a new seminar presenter and had a lot to offer. The attendees love that. In retrospect, the xingyi spear I tried to teach was just a little too much for about half of my class. I'll have to scale it back even more next year, assuming I teach there again.

Has anyone seen season 3 of KF w/ David Carradine where he plays a young Caine and he is walking with Master Po in the Shaolin Temple?
In front of them..maybe 50 feet is a Long Haired almost albino looking Tibetan Lama..
The Lama is chanting Amithabo..Amithabo(I think..or some other well known Chant)...from a lotus position..and then he lets out a shriek...
Upon letting out the shriek...the reflecting pool in front of him bursts into flames and then turns into a tree!
Then in the next part..the Llamas eyes roll back in his head (you just see the whites of his eyes) and you see the room begins to fade out as this white light begins to form in the Llamas 3rd eye chakra.
As the room fades to black and the circular light forms in the chakra..you then see the tree--AND the Llama disappear and all you see in their place is a circular ring of apples..which Master Po tells "grasshopper" to collect.
Who cares about learning traditional kung fu. I just want to be able to do some funky sh-t like that and turn my enemy into a tree or a row of apples...
Muahahahahahahahah!

I've always wanted a flying guillotine. I've also always wanted one of those flying claws that grab flesh. I've seen reference to these in books, but I've never been able to validate that said books were any more than modern fiction. I've seen a flying claw, but never one that closed. The claw I saw was just a piece of flat sheet metal, cut into the shape of a hand and bent appropriately. Almost bought it anyway, but didn't. I've never seen a flying guillotine outside of books and movies.

So no formal shuai Jiao training. I know Painter is a Bagua instructor and I looked Kwan Sai Hung and it says he is Tai Chi Qi Gong teacher. Judo and Akido are great but there not Shuai Jiao. And sure Bagua has a lot of throws but dosn't make it Shuai Jiao.

Actually Shuai is a concept found in all arts as I forgot to mention and Jake reminded me.
You posted Judo and Taijiquan experience. Taiji is also full of Shuai material as well. Judo is very similar to Shuai Jiao but a bit different due to it being nicer in application.
Ive been shown many ways to throw the human body.
Throwing is one of my fav things to do.

I can't comment on the Suai Jiao much since I have ..at this stage..not learned any. I've only been studying 8 step mantis for a little over a year. Supposedly in it's development..a master incorporated a good ammount of Suai Jiao into the system..I believe moreso than 7 star mantis.
Though I have never had the privledge of meeting the man..I have browsed thru Dr.Yang Jwing Ming's book entitled "Tai Ji Chin-Na"..it's looks really fascinating!!
What confuses me I suppose is this: is Dr. Ming commenting and demonstrating these Chin-Na moves as they are an ADJUNCT to traditional tai chi moves...or...is he in essence stating that each tai-chi posture IS/HAS ITS OWN separate Chin-Na application?
Can anyone comment on this?
Didn't mean to drift off onto the Chin-Na. My sifu in 8 step has done some Suai throws that have landed me on my a-s with my body contorted in some of the most unusual positions! The funny thing about it..is...each maneuver has a unique name such as "disciple stands before the throne" or some other such name(that one I just made up)..but it's very interesting how something may look at times rather peculiar when done free standing without an application ..yet when applied...BAM!!!...seee...yaaaaaa!!!!

Yeah I had never been given a shot glass before and Gene gave me a cool one from San Fran.
The bowmore with added American Ginseng was great! Though Gene as noted above did not like it.
I did get a little lit but it was my birthday...
Had some great workshops teaching Shuai Jiao concepts and Dit Da for martial artists. I had Sifu John Greene in my Shuai Jiao workshop and Sifu Pedro Cepero Yee in my dit da course. Great to see other brothers attending!
It was a great time and always a pleasure to see people sharing and crossing over the silly political bridges to build friendships.

...so I combed the cheesy overpriced airport tourist shops for something that would fit a kilt-wearing gorilla like Dale (honestly if you ever get to meet Dale face-to-face, he's one big dude and I mean that in a complimentary sort of way). There was only one of the shot glass of choice on the shelves, it was made in China, and it was the most kilt-wearing (which I mean in a totally derogatory sort of way) - absolutely perfect for something that would soon be soiled by that Bowmore-ginseng abomination. Fortunately, I wound up spilling my Bow-seng on the chief by totally accident (he thought it was quite funny at the time).
Dale's totally right about the sharing, crossing over and building friendships stuff. That's the best part about the Zhang San Feng Festival. There's no competition, so little attitude. Everyone just enjoys it all. There's a lot of beginners for sure, but there's enough high level skills to keep more advanced students interested. In fact, often the high level stuff goes flying over most of the attendees heads, but that's fine. At least they get exposure (and not in the what's under Dale's kilt sort of way).
I know, I know, I give Dale a hard time about the kilt. And truth be told, I never saw him in it all weekend.
Time to merge this with all the previous ZSF threads, just for archival simplicity.

They find it amusing that I like that stuff because it's cheaper, less aged, and bt most people's opinion, crappier. But I like it. I like JD. Green Label is like JD lite - which is acceptable given the extensive night training we might be facing with the other JD this year (Jim Donnelly ;)). Drown some sorrows, anyone?
But never mind all that, the rest of you should come too. And not just to party with a huge dude in a kilt. Come train with us. We promise to take it easy on newbies. ;)

Looks like I'm not doing my stereotypical writing workshop this time. Not sure what's up with Jim's scheduling there, but whatev. I'll be doing one on Shaolin Qixing (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=54037).
Dale, after a curt websearch, I'm skeptical if there's a jacuzzi.

No biggie about the jacuzzi though its nice to soak old bones in hot water after being on your feet all day.
Ill be bringing some single malt goodness(without added ginseng).
Another birthday at the Zhang San, always a fun time.
When are you coming in?
Ill be looking for you.

Look forward to seeing who comes out this year.
Ill be turning 43 this year.

If you can swing it brother I would love to meet up.

Even if you can't afford to participate in the workshops, come out and visit Dale and me. There's some free activities, like a procession at the end and a sales area. Tiger Claw (http://www.tigerclaw.com) will have a table there.
That would be an awesome 'forum members representing' pic in the mag. We used to do a lot more of those in our event coverage. It would great to meet you face-to-face.

I just heard from Jim Donnelly. He says that there is a film room and DVD player. Last year, there was a film room and Jim showed some flicks, but it was sort of an afterthought. I told him I could supply something a little more cutting edge. After all, I have some unique resources at my disposal when it comes to martial arts movies. (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=15) ;)
So I'm pleased to announce that as a special attraction at the 2009 Zhang San Feng Festival, I'll be hosting Kung Fu movie night.

Jack,
Jiulong Baguazhang is from Sichuan Province.
The Li family brought it to the US via Li Long Dao and taught it to Dr. John Painter.
Nothing to be confused about. It is similar to Liang Shou Yu's Baguazhang but a little different.
My teacher Dr. John Painter wrote one of the forewords to Master Liang;s Baguazhang book that was publised by Dr. Yang Jwing Ming.

Who says we'd be imitators? I actually studied the style a little, back in the day. It's given me the tools to be where I am now. ;)
Who says we'd be imitators?i was going to make some slyly snide remarks utilizing the english dictionary and stuff, but i figured this post would do its own justice...
i think i can swing it tomorrow(june 4th). technically i was told to be home before the kids have to go to bed, but i understand my girlfriends extended family network has no problem watching our two kids. i'll bring all the best of my toys for us aspiring martial artists to play with... i like nothing better than tickling a few brains. it'll be like show and tell for the bigger people. i was going to leave at like 5am'ish... too early?

We were so honored to get to meet y'all in the flesh. That was one of the high points of the weekend for me. Thanks so much for making the effort. It was a real treat.
Too bad Dale's kilt was horribly stained from celebrating his b-day the night before, but I do have pics, including a horrible embarrassing one of moose abuse by Big D. That's too much for the mag. We'll use one of the other more tasteful ones for print and post that one here. ;)

dang-sorry I missed it. I already had tix to see Cirque Du Soliel in the afternoon, and then Nine Inch Nails and Jane's Addiction that same evening.
btw-save your money for Kooza. Only two good routines and the rest was not up to Cirque Du Soliel's usual standard. I was dissapointed, as I am a huge fan of CDS. Allegria, Saltimbanco, Quidam, Dralion were all great.

Thanks for coming out and meeting up with Gene and myself.
My teacher also thanked you, and noted that you were both well mannered and knowledgeable people.
Aww, Gene can we print up the moose abuse please?????
If not it has to be put up here for all to see.
And for all those people that did not show, you missed some of the best Popcorn Sutton Shine.
Thanks Marcus and Billy Joe Bob for making my bday most excellent.
More photos later when I get back to Boston.

hey guys, it was a blast to meet DD, Gene and Uki in person; also a pleasure to sit down and chat w/Sifu Painter and his associates re:some of the more salient issues facing CMA in this current day and age;
next time everyone has to come to NYC - we can sneak into LKFMDC's gym, hog tie him, and make him watch re-runs of "Kung Fu":eek::eek:
the whole idea of the festival has given me a ka-zillion idea's... we have almost 3 acres here adjacent to 19 acres of my girlfriends grandmother. there are a few small ponds, lots of woods, and a stream... i intend to add some earth-stone-wood yurts this summer... anyhow, i am offering our space up to utilize for workshops and what-not. in the true martial arts fashion, there would be no charge(donations would be fine) - what would be benefited from this idea would be a great reduction in the price of the tickets, which would attract more people, and would be in a more natural setting. there is even a house for rent at the end of our road that has weekend and weekly rates, aswell as numerous hotels, and there is also the fine art of camping out... just think about it... open sky, bonfires, drum and music circles at night. meals could be jointly prepared, with the sharing of recipies between attendee's and teachers... more reminiscent of the late jou tsung hwa's original festival, as opposed to this modernized-yuppie-style organization... i mean a resort is nice and all, but in the end, health and healing are about returning to nature, not vacationing in nature.
just tossing the idea out there. :)
i too enjoyed meeting forum members face to face... actually it is the first time i have ever met anyone in person that i met over the internet first.

There's an amazing article on Dahn Yoga
amazing? as in "It's amazing that people still buy into that silliness?", or "it's amazing that they haven't been outed as a cult yet?", or "it's amazing that I had a conversation with the 'head' of the system where he told me that 10,000 years ago Koreans went to China and founded Taoism (no, seriously, I did!)?"
and it was aliens that told the koreans about what is called "taoism" some 10,000 years ago. :p
