Occasionally,

I'll see references to folks who hit the heavy bag, boxing style referring to their being able to "fold it over" from their strikes,

which I presume to mean that the bag collapses and folds in/over the area in which their fist struck it.

I have a heavy bag (100lbs I think) hanging in my garage from a stand, and there is no way I am able to fold that sucker in from striking it. While it is not a solid as some Muay Thai banana bags I've seen which were more like dried rock, this bag is fairly substantial. It is similar to one of these:

Now aside from being a wuss, and not being roided up :p
what am I missing about hammering the daylights out of this thing? Is this from accumulated hitting to it's surface such that it's innards have been "tenderized" or are you just "men of steel"?

Are you guys that can fold it over torquing at it from last tuesday to get it to collapse like that? I'm presuming you are wrapping your wrists as well right?

Just curious.

pw

the bag will fold in a ''v'' shape , the speed power and depth of the shot , goes through the bag like a bullet causeing the middle section to explode out

not hard to do but i trained thai kicks and boxing for awhile but i have seen guys alot smaller them me fold it effortlessly just good sloid body menchanics thats all

i don't were wrist wraps never did but i have ripped my knuckles raw when i used to train the hook and upper cut . but there are special bags for those punches

now i can fold it with a wing chun lead hand stright punch or combonation but it requires explosive footwork

really nothing special for all that flashy power if i miss my recovery will suck and if you catch my timing you can zap me no problem :D

A brand new bag won't fold right away. With usage, most heavy bags will develop soft spots at these "fold over" areas and will eventually tear there. Also the heavier the bag, and the smaller the circumference, the easier it is to fold it over. Bag construction also plays a roll. A newer, high quality bag will be much harder to fold over than an older or cheaper one.

Hmm...

Make sure you yell your KIA after each strike, then I think you will find folding the bag easier.

Heh, I just thought of going into a KIA dealership and yelling, "KIIIIIAAAAAAAAAA!"

Well, at least I thought that was funny :)

BTW, how do you spell kia? (key - eye is how its pronounced) I just remember back in the day when I took karate you were suppose to KIA in certain parts of the form.

LOL at gangsterfist. :p

You mean Kiai, not kia the Korean automobile.

Perhaps one could also scream YUGO at it as well.

hahahahaha

Yeah I meant kiai, have noted this for further use of this word so I don't confuse it with the automobile. :D

A note on folding the heavy bag. Before the rumble in the jungle-
Foreman was folding the heavy bag. Ali was in comparison tapping it. Guess who got knocked out.
Incidentally- Ali was here in Phoenix a couple of days ago- for fund raising for the Barrows Neurological institute. In an interview- he said that he was most proud of defeating Liston .
Liston folded bags with his awesome left hook and sometimes just witha powerful jab. In their second and final fight- Ali ended it witha famous "phantom punch" a shortquick short power straight righy hand hit .. People were incredulous that Liston went down. But if you play the fight in slow motion- I have done it several times- you see the short right that didnt have to travel far.
"How" you hit the bag is important. Also bags are made of different materials and have different stuffings. Weight and how high you hang them plus wraps and bag gloves are also variables.
But wing chun power is somewhat different from boxing power-
dfferent mechanics and different "pathologies" IMO.If you stand there either kind of power can get you.
