Saw this and 'Lost in Translation' this weekend. Really enjoyed Bill Murray's nuanced performance in LIT. I was disappointed in M&C. Never read the books and never been big on the Nautical epic before. The film was beautifully made. Painstakingly detailed with great chacterzations. BUT, something was missing. The whole was less than the sum of its parts. I can't p[ut my finger on it, though. Anyone elase see this movie?

This doesn't sound like a movie I'd pay to watch

It's getting good reviews. I imagined it would be the "Gladiator" of sea movies.

That's what I thought too, but I was disappointed. It wasn't as exciting as Gladiator and the character's motivations weren't as compelling.

The most riveting part of the movie was "lesser of two weavels",
apart from that everything was bland, and simply put POORLY DONE, I was thoroughly disappointed in the very Flat, Master and Commander.

Did you hear that Russell Crowe had to "get in shape" for this movie?

Yea, I heard he had to let himslef go b/c Jack Aubrey was a portly man. Hardly a Robert DeNiro transformation.

I think so, but I love Bill Murray movies. Rushmore and Ground Hog Day were awesome too. This is more subtle Murray but laugh out loud funny at times. I read a review that I totally agree with: "Coppola does an amazing job because the audience never gets bored watching two character that are totally bored out of their minds."

Gladiator ruled... But they did the thumb thingy wrong. Thumbs up = kill him and thumbs down = spare his life.. Not the other way around as people think

I really don't think they were concernced with historical accuracy in Gladiator so the 'thumbs thing' would match people's expectations. I liked the movie, though. Wasn't as good as Braveheart or Sparticus, but a good show nonetheless.

They said the "thumbs down" motion was to simulate a sword stabbing someone, which is the same explanation I've always heard anyway.

There is a lot of debate about the "thumbs thingy". The truth is no one really knows. Everyone claims to know, but the only way to be sure is to have lived in Rome. Just another lost minor detail.
