I still box competively. For SD western boxing is pretty ok. If you want to compete in MMA ofcourse you have to learn other things.
Alot of pple put down western boxing for lack of kicks. Well I think that is foolish. Not many Asian MA practioner are outstanding kickers and using your hands im more practical in any situation. Sure kicks delivery more power but you need several varibales to pull them off effectively. Often you are close enough to just punch your antagonist. Footwork is very important in western boxing (and is the easiest way to tell between pple who actually know boxing and pple who think they do from watching Rocky.) Proper footwork helps you work the area and set your opponent up for your combinations.

Odd you brought this up, yesterday a new player came to our silat group, I hope he chooses to stay, he IS a boxer, and has been boxing since he was little, plus he also is into muay thai and is a big lover of chen style tai chi from which he has practiced I believe for about 7 years.

My remark is a reverse of your question, he commented yesterday that tai chi has helped him out greatly in his boxing skills, in terms of working on the inside, sensitivity and relaxation.

I tend to think his tai chi training comes from more of a warriror perspective than many hug a tree commerical style kwoons as when he practiced tai chi, it would be form practice for 2 hours and then open sparring for 3.

I saw him do some two handed push hands with a silat bro of mine who is in the internal arts, his tai chi style being I believe Yang, and it was very interesting to watch. Made me rethink my perspectives about good tai chi.

Cheers.

I think the punches in Western boxing offer a great offense to any fighter, I found the footwork to be at a bit of a disadvantage.
As in Muay thai where you actually use your legs to kick, the weight shifting is different than just using your feet to float like in boxing.

"Made me rethink my perspectives about good tai chi."

Cant say Ive ever seen good pure tai chi. Id like to however...

I actually really like western boxings footwork... It can be slightly manipulated to set lots of nice trap steps...

WD,

No, this gent was around 33 or so, he just came back up from Texas. He also has good experiance in Bagua and Southern mantis. I watched him show my silat senior some southern mantis hard chi kung. Like most good players and I know you will get this, he is a student of the arts, likes to get out there, learn, and play.

I am going to be getting him some info on a old school savate/zipota school in Chicago next week when he comes to sat's class or maybe sooner if he comes to our fma group.

Cheers

BlackJack,

This school wouldn't happen to be affiliated with Prof. Paul Buitron's Savate organization would it? Just curious.

I think his organization has a gym here already, the Windy City Savate Club. Can't say much about them other than they seem like nice guys who train hard. If it's not affliated with Buitron, I'd be really interested in what you find out, just for curiousity's sake. :D

CrippleAvenger,

Yeah that is the school connected to Prof. Paul Buirton and his Danse De Rue savate group. I heard the guy there Patrick Gavin is more sport Box Francaise oriented but since he is connected to Prof. Buitron I know he also teaches the Danse De Rue pugilistic material.

How much of it, I don't know, as Danse De Rue, a combination of western arts like savate, zipota, lutte parissine, and panache also works with weapons and it has a heavy back alley street fighting viewpoint, it should be a start for him though.

Did you not like want you saw, did you see the Buirton family material or sport savate, or is the school just very sport focused, I have heard some good things about the school.

Cheers

BlackJack,

I have no problem with Buitron or Danse De Rue. I was just thinking if they were another Savate group then I was going to be highly surprised. :D I have enormous respect for Savate and Boxe Francaise as standup systems, and so I had been doing a search for clubs when I stumbled across their contact info.

As is, a former Muay Thai clubmate of mine did some work with them a while ago and had good things to say about them. In fact, I was going to look them up shortly before I hooked up with WaterDragon, but maybe I'll see what they offer should I find the time and money for some more stand-up work.

I also hear Patrick Gavin is no chump in or out of a ring, so I'd venture to say they're worth a look. If you get a chance to visit them, lemme know how it goes.

Best of luck to ya.

Cerebrus - Would you mind sharing some of your experiences in xingyi and bagua, particularly compared to your boxing experience? I think alot of people would be interested in any remarks you could share; I know I certainly would. Thanks for your input.
