View Full Version : keeping our bodies as ageless as our wing chun

part of being able to do our wing chun is the ability to practice it for many years. what tips have we all come up with or gleaned from our masters, whose bodies have slowed before ours, so that we may prolong our bodies' health and continue to study our art even as nature may attempt to weaken us as we age. what tidbits, both large and small, have we learned about our knees, shoulders, hips, back, feet, hands, lungs and more.

i'm a 26-year-old man with a little over four years in the art, so my experience is limited. but i would like to be able to continue my practice well into my latter years, and i wish the same for everyone else. the best thing i can suggest is always stretch after class, if even only for one or two stretches. don't rush it, but i don't feel five seconds on six stretches is as good as 30 seconds on one.

anyhoo, please share your thoughts. :)

My Sifu is in his early 60s, looks decades younger and has the springy step of someone in their 20s. I doubt there are many people his age who can do what he can do, physically, but I'm sure his young looks are attributable to a good attitude and philosophy, as well as Wing Chun.

My own secret to looking young is that my mental age hasn't yet progressed beyond that of an 18-year-old!

Be a little more playful with people or whatever works that you do. It makes your life filled with laughters, joy, and friendships. Bob Hope lived to his 100th years! People die slowly mostly from boredom and stress.

well
first of all don't let wing chun be your guide it's a martial arts training system , the science of the human body
let your body be your guide
eat right [ i'm a vegiterien ] work out wieghts and cardio , heart and muscle . don't drink or smoke ,
learn to listen to your body when you feel good and can push it do so and progress but when you need to rest then rest don't be stubburn.
study your body and how it works with the same deveotion you apply to your wing chun .
understand what eating certian things does to your body , bood and bad ,
it's funny we have our bodies all our lives and spend so much time learning about other things .
p.s. i'm 35 , i've broken my back,collarbone,leg,ribs had a bursted appendix allat seperate times . but i look like i'm in my 20's and move like i'm in my teens ........

don't be fooled old timers
one of the most inspirational people to cross my path was the man that taught me about health and training , he was 65 years young , and still had a 6 pack
he told me something that has stayed with me , and motivated me , he said '' at 65 five i can still beat my grand children in a race up a mountain ''
and i believe him he was still a p.e. coach .

i can only hope in 30 years to half that good

True on Food , dont, smoke and drink.

Wck has lots of things, on breathing, medirian, and mind conditioning which i don't care at my 30's. imho.

I just come back from retreat and Hiking trip from Yosemiti.
my body condition is better then i am 25 even i am 44 living a fast tract coorporate life for past 15 years without serious daily training.. and have to rebuild my body when i get into pretty serious health condition years ago with help of a tcm doctor in who and who's list in tcm. i guess those things from kuenkuit and rainbow:D works.

I do suggest people learn the 6 sounds growing qi method, an old chinese method being used in daoism, buddism, confuism, chinese doctor, and even present day .. a true simple technology for healty and rebuilding body... imho. once one experience the breathing, silence, medirians... getting into SLT is simple and always has a GPS to track the training.

defeat oneself first the rest is not that difficult...imho. turn into rainbow and live beyond physical. not a vampire though:D

Wing Chun will not keep you feeling young or fit.
If done properly there should be very little strength used.
Although exercise and diet can aid in staying fit at an old age, much of health is plain old genetics.
If Mom, Dad, Grand Father and Grand Mother are a wreck, chances are you will be to.
