Hello russell,

Whilst I agree that your approach may be effective, I would definately want to make sure I had made contact with the
attacking arm whilst also simultaneously attacking.

My main reason being that if you are successful in attacking
whilst the hook punch is in motion, this does not mean your attack will stop the hook punch dead in its tracks and it may still come round and whak you in the head.

bye for now

It may work, specially if you are stepping closer to him as you attack. It always depend on the situation that is always unique. The most important thing is to get rid of this rattan ring before attacking!...;) :D

timing and distance plus awarness dictate what you do
1 the begining of the '' hook '' you drop him as he loads up punch kick to the balls eye jab , hit him with a smelly gym shoe what ever , as long as your within range and you are aware enough to pull it off
2 in the middle of the action'' hook in this case '' you might need a block or parry depending on you distance and ability to intercept
3 at the end of the action , as it retracts or passes by , you are to late or to far out to catch the first two timings so you follow the action back and fill the void between the first and the second action , blocks won't be needed here but a monitering hand might not hurt to cover the second attack line

but again a nice kick in the nutts would work in all three examples and never require a passive action like a block .
it all comes down to luck/chance/ and your awarness

or you could just throw the rattan ring at him as a distraction:D

in my experience with hooks, you rarely see them coming.

i throw them in chi sau rather often, when i've gained control over someone as a "well, i have control how can i finish them" kind of deal. they flow real nice after a low shot then have the same hand come up and around with a hook. with WC mechanics, even done lightly it packs a whallop - not to mention there are a lot of nice targets on the side of the head.

i've rarely (if ever) had one of my hooks blocked. they just don't see em coming, and since i already have control, there isn't much they could do anyways.

when they've happened to me, if i have the appropriate hand free (which isn't too often if one comes flying when we chi sau), usually when it's come into my vision and if i can do something about it, bong or kup jarn (high elbow covering the side of my head) phave worked.

in my experience there isn't too much you can do about a skilled hook, except try not to get there in the first place and don't let it sneak in on you :D

what ernie said was good too :D

If your attack doesn't even interrupt the opponent's movement, much less incapacitate them, better start running!

dear tjd , this is what, i was getting at, some people try to cover all the time , if you were fighting someone say from choy lay fut in which i have and i nearly got my head knocked off in compertion . i would never tan sau i would get in as close as possable so he could not use that mongel sow punch, with a boxer same deal , except use my footwork, and try to hit him behind his back. peace russell sherry
