According to "Mail Call" on THE HISTORY CHANNEL, US Marines started wearing the leather neck collar to protect their necks during combat in 1798. The nickname "leatherneck"was first used in the Civil War. The leather collar was removed from the uniform in 1872.

No mention of the PI.

That figures. I guess they wanted to cover the fact they the marines were getting their heads lopped off... When was this on?

It is on again at 2PM EST.

THE HISTORY CHANNEL had a documentary on sidearms of the military, and they challenged the legend that US Marines in the PI changed from .38 caliber to .45 caliber sidearms to drop the fanatical Moros swordsmen. The .45 was the preferred caliber long before the US military arrived in the PI.

If THC's researchers are right, the leather neck collar was gone before we got to the PI, and the .45 was the preferred caliber in sidearms before we got to the PI. This does not change the fact that the FMA are extremely effective IMO.

For me it was last night. and it was talked about after the segment for which in I tuned. Roman soldier secret weapon(s).

8 30 pm (that time of night not sure the time zones) the Histiry Channel might have a show on Bows (archery).
