For anyone in Arizona, Sifu Don Grose from the Tucson Ving Tsun Academy is planning a gathering of Wing Chun brothers and sisiters. I personaly don't have all the plans before me, but you can contact him via e-mail. This is I do know, it will be held at a park to keep it informal as was suggested. There will be no politic discussions, etc, and will be held February 1st. Just a meeting to bring us together and have a good time. Sifu Don Grose can be contacted via e-mail at sijodon@hotmail.com. I wish I had more details but I don't unfortunately. Hope to see you there.

More than likely it will be in Phoenix, possible Tempe. We are trying to find something central to everyone. There are some coming from Prescott as well. ;)

I'm going to be out in Sedona on the 12th of Feb. How far is the drive to Phoenix or Tempe?

Tempe is about 130 miles from Sedona. The trip should take about 2.5 hours depending on traffic and the day you make the trip...although now that I think about it the traffic going from Sedona to Phoenix should be a lot lighter than the other way around. A lot of people from the valley head up north on the weekends.

Sounds great! I'd like to join . . .
Please keep us posted on time and place.

I received an email from Sifu Don Grose, and he said the date was Feb. 2, but the time and place had not been decided on, yet. He can be reached at the address given by AZWINGCHUN, and would like to hear from those interested.

Sounds like things have not settled down yet. date change
and yet not defined time and place. Is this basically for Don's own students and then expanded?

pvwingchun

Apparently there was some communication error I just heard from Sifu Grose and it is on the 1st in PHX. They have not decided on a time or meeting place yet.

This has been in process for about 3 months now, at least discussion of it anyway. The date is Feb. 1st. He had originally wanted to do it in a banquet hall, but some forum members had mentioned to me that maybe a park would be better. This to keep it not so formal. So, we decided that maybe a park would be better. I have been in contact with Sifu Bradley (who is affiliated with him) and are throwing suggestions around. Anyone with any suggestions can e-mail me at chandlerwingchun@cox.net, we are trying to keep it somewhat centralized due to people coming from
Tucson and Prescott.

As for the question, was this for Sifu Don's students and then expaned? No, I am not one of Sifu Don's students, though we are associated with each other. Three months ago he contacted me and asked if Sifu Rick Frye from Prescott and I would join he and one of his instructors to start planning this. The plan from the beginning was to try and unite the Wing Chun family in Arizona.

Hope to see you all there.;)

Wow.. It would be great if all the sifus residing around Phoenix can get together to exchange ideas and promote WCK as one family.

Sifu Loewenhagen, do you have an open mind to come and exchange some ideas? :)

How about you, sifu Yuenfen? :)

Organizing something like this isnt easy. Arizona is a big place.
Don is in Tucson- so are many others there including Augustine Fong, Vaght, Lopez etc . IN Phoenix apart from the ones mentioned thus far there are Brian Tufts and others in Queen Creek, The Leung Ting Folks
have a headquarters here and there are others. If Don is organizing it - whoever is in touch with him perhaps can ask him to invite everyone. There was confusion on the date and time and place has not been settled. In my own case Saturday mornings are usually out witha commitment. Sunday would be better. the other potential problem for me is that I am due for the arrival of a grandson around that time... and those things have a logic of their own in time demands. But I certainly will keep an open mind as this thing develops.

azwingchun
01-08-2003, 06:35 AM
I hear what you are saying, though this is just to get together as many as we can. But to be honest I don't know that it will be all that big. But if this turns out to be an annual thing as he is talking about, I would hope and expect it to grow. For the most part this will be a meet and greet and open discussions. I am sure there are those who won't come or even want to come. But hopefully as time goes on they will join the rest of us, this is the plan anyway.

As far as the park, this I will have an answer in the next day or two as well as a time. The month is still yound and we have plenty of time. I understand you have a grandson on the way, and this is understandable. But we would love to have you join us if possible.

I also don't want to mislead anyone, this first one probably isn't going to be a huge festival gathering. Basically, this is being done blindly, meaning we have no idea of what the turnout is going to be. So, according to Sifu Don, it will very basic, were not going to be cooking food and buying beer (LOL). Though, Sifu Don and I both have had a descent amount of replies. And for anyone who has connections with the Leung Ting group or the Fong group, and/or the non-organization guys, invite them. Again hope to see you all there.;)

Some of you may have already received an e-mail from me stating the place and time of the gathering. But for those who didn't, here it is. The time will be Saturday February 1st at around noon and go until 3 or 4. It will be at (as it looks right now) Chaparral Park in Scottsdale. For a map to the park go here: www.awcaonline.com/park.htm . If there are any changes I will post them here, but as of now everything looks great. Hope to see you there. And let's get all the Wing Chun players involved. ;)

Sifu Don Grose has asked me to have anyone that is interested in being at the gathering to please e-mail him, he is trying to get an idea of how many will be at the gathering. And for those instructors who can't make it he has asked if you can at least send a represnative from your school to attend. Thanks again. His e-mail is sijodon@hotmail.com .;)

I personally don't know, I will have to get with Sifu Don Grose. I know I will be ther as well as 2 or 3 of my students, there are probably 3-4 from our Prescott school, Sifu Sonnenberg said he couldn't make it but would be sending his top student, Sifu Don Grose will obviously be there as well as Sifu Phil Bradley and their students and other instructors from their Association. There are also the 4 or 5 here on the board who have said that they will be there as well. I don't personally know that this will be a huge turnout for the the first gathering anyway. But the more the better, I have sent e-mails personally to all the different groups I could think of. But word of mouth is going to help tremendously. ;)

I will get a hold of Sifu Don Grose and see what response he has had. But like I asked earlier for those who are planning on being there, please let Sifu Don Grose know via phone or e-mail. Thanks.:)

azwc- anything organized in the way of a program--- such as comparing a basic form... or is it all informal?

azwingchun
01-18-2003, 01:30 AM
I really personally don't know the details, this really is Sifu Don's planning. I was just asked to help invite and to send e-mails to everyone. I did just send an e-mail to him after reading your last question and he is pretty good about responding quickly, so I should have your answer.

I had spoke to Sifu Phil Bradley a week ago, he said that most people were going to wear there school shirts (or some kind of logo) so everyone knows who everyone represents. He also mentioned that this being the first gathering it will be somewhat informal, though there was some talk about basic form demonstrations, discussion on technique and the main topic about obviously brining everyone together as a community, and to discuss future planning of this gathering.

If any other questions, feel free to ask myself or Sifu Don Grose.;)

Back to your question, if you haven't already spoken to Sifu Don Grose. The agenda for that day will first be a meet and greet, an explanation to what we are trying to accomplish with this annual gathering. Then an open forum for each group to discuss their feeling on how to make it better and what their expectations are. And lastly open up to form demonstrations and training.

Hope this helps.:)

I don't know about Sedona, but we have a school in Prescott Valley. It is about 45 minutes to an hour away from Sedona. But if you go that same weekend he will be here in Phoenix so won't be open. His name is Sifu Rick Frye and the school phone number is 928-772-1998. ;)

It was a lot of fun. I'm glad I got to see SNT from other families performed!

Yeah, actually the whole idea of the gathering, the unity and as Joy mentioned civilty, doing something as a group for the community, sharing of each others arts, etc. was great, but to see everyones SNT was one of the best part.;)

This being the first gathering I think that we accomplished quite a bit!

For me, I made some new friends, participated in good conversations and thoroughly appreciated and enjoyed everyone showing their first form.

It was definetly cool putting faces to names and meeting other wing chun guys and girls from around the state.

I'm definetly looking foward to future gatherings!

Thanks to all the gentlemen that made this thing happen.

It was good to meet and talk, although I am sure not everyone got to talk with everyone, I know I didn't. Even though few ideas were talked about for future events/gatherings I think the biggest hurdle ("civility" as Joy put it) was cleared and we can now move forwards. It was also good to put a few faces to the names from people here on the forum.

Hope we can all get together again and maybe sooner than later, and as our Kung Fu brothers and sisters around the state hear about what happened hopefully our numbers can grow.

I thought the gathering was a great success. Besides putting a face with a name I also developed a friendship with the name. The SNT was awesome as mentioned before. although I wish there would have been more rolling of hands between the fams.
Maybe people were a little shy or modest this being the first encounter, perhaps next time the Ice will already be broken.

PS ( It was a great Idea to incorporate the children into the snt form lol)

Not when I or some of my students were there. I was there from about noon to around 3. After I left the schools that remained apparently did their slt. Before I left, Phil Bradley rolled a bit with someone off to one side and a couple did a little pak sao drill.

No conflicts- just chit chat. I wish that there had been chi sao but
given Arizona wing chun mini "history" it was probably good that we just got together.
