xian bo (shan bo) are the round coin with the square hole in the middle. very common coin of ancient china, same as you would see on tang dynasty or han dynasty money trees (or many other dynasties money trees).

the throwing coins were essentially just coins, and for the chinese versions, they were the xianbo type coin.

it could very well be that a specific throwing weapon was later developed from a simple coin.
