1. Is it ok to do them with the toes pointing out, or should the toes be parallel?

2. Do they thicken your torso?

Sticky; you should allow the toes to point outward so that your upperlegs and toes are in line. Trying to keep your feet completely parellel can strain your knees. As far as thickening your torso, if you are doing heavy weights/low reps you are unlikely to add much muscle size but your abs, obliques, and spinal erectors will be stronger and more dense, which might make your waist look smaller.
