im seriously considering buying the pan nam video series just to enrich my knowlege of wing chun. im really interested in pan nam approach to wing chun. if you've seen the videos do you think they are good? from the decriptions about them they sound good. to me they seem like of the same high quality in showing techniques and aproach as rene's yeun kay san wing chun kuen. do they show lots of different applications, or are they like the boring books that only demonstrate sil lim tau with very few and poor aplications. it would be great if anyone could tell me anything about them. thanks :D peace.

Which videos are you referring to?

There was an excellent documentary filmed in China showing Pan Nam performing his system (with his son helping with the dummy and performing the knives). It's by no means instructional, but is great just to see an octogenarian Pan move around.

Parts of the documentary were melded with new footage of his son to form a multi-part VCD series (that showed sections and application, if memory serves), and also added some demos of other Nam Kuen material. Probably more referential than instructional, but a nice little series.

Eddie Chong also made a few tapes on Pan Nam. It melds in some Yip Man material, like Luk Sao, and uses the 6.5 Pole as a warm-up for Pan's Hung Ga pole, but also a nice look at the system as Chong sifu preserves it.

(Note: I haven't watched any of this material in several years, so I don't remember the level of detail provided, but like any WCK tape set, I believe it more highlight than in depth).

wca- Eddie Chong might have the documentary, not sure tho. I bought the VCDs in Guangzhou, but some Chinatowns may have them. They may also have been transferred to video in the West. You could also always try to VTM.

I got mine in China too, but I know they can be ordered online for a reasonable price ($15-20 each?). Try a search for "pan nam wing chun vcd".

IIRC, they don't demonstrate many applications against a live opponent. It's just forms and drills.
