Is anybody else sick of big whiteguys flailing their arms around like Jet Li in modern action movies? I mean like Matt Damon in the Bourne Identity, or insert name of movie here_______. Whatever happened to good ol' realistic ruff and tumble fighting in action flicks? I have nothing against traditional martial arts in movies, but when Steven Segal drops down on one arm like a Capoeria stylist something is definitely wrong. Stevy Boy used to be my favorite because he'd just walk in and kick somebody's arse. No big stand off, he was an expert, they were ****e and he took care of business. No wasted movements. Now everybody looks like they are trying to impress the judges at a Wushu forms competition.
Any thoughts?
When I put together some choreography for that video my friend was shooting, I was able to put in a lot of grappling choreography. This was interesting for two reasons. First, no one really see's a lot of "fast paced" grappling choreography, and second you can actually make a lot more contact with grappling, and even "spar" a bit on camera making it that more realistic.
I think "reality" can be extremely exciting if you do it right. If everyone does the same old routines it's going to get boring real fast.

That's one thing that always ticks me off about movie fights. Everyone always says "This is how you do it to make it look good on camera", yet great directors can make someone drinking coffee a visual experience.
Thus, we rarely see real kung fu, most of what we see is cartoon, because they don't want to set up the shot.

I'd like to see that.
When I think of what I consider to be the best action/fight sequence that I've seen in the last year, it would have to be off of the lame TV show Walker Texas Ranger. Walker supposably infiltrates a prison to break up an illegal fighting ring that was dominated by none other than Frank Shamrock. Bad acting and lameness aside, the final fight between Shamrock and Walker was awesome. It was almost all grappling, and it was choreographed beautifully. That's what I'd like to see more of in movies.
