I am doing WT and when practicing the stance i seem to get knee pain.
I have been told u need to have adduction between the knees creating a linkage effect-what does this mean exactly?
I assume this means pulling the knees in together-how much do u pull them in?because i think its this pulling is what is causing the knee pain!!!
and why do we have this adduction in the first place?
regards.

Rather than list chat where no one sees what you are doing- advice can be misleading. Best to show and tell with a top flight person or your sifu in your line. Little adjustemnts could make a difference.
the legs are turned in, not pulled in (pidgeontoed stance); we rotate the entire leg inward, so our knees are comfortably doing what they should be doing instead of being at any awkward angle and causing pain
the adduction we practice is clenching the ground with your legs instead of doing funky things with your knees.
put both your hands palm down on a table and try to pull your hands and the table underneath them together. its similar to that
this adduction can power many movements (if thats what your going for), like stepping, kicking and rotating. it also can add a snap or whipping effect to your hand motions. not only that but your obviously more rooted :)
however, this kind of adduction really doesnt become useful or apparent til the wooden dummy/biu jee
if your just beginning, i'd focus more on just standing and trying to be relaxed and comfortable, and to try and find your root, instead of pulling your knees together
but like yf said, ask your sifu :)

Stance should be comfortable, not painful.

S. teebas at the beginning when the stance is new to you, didn't you find it ''painful''?
Only when you relax and settle down in to the stance is it ''comfortable''
The knee joint should bear no wieght but rather transfer the weight to the floor.
pidgeon toe stance training helps you align your body naturally without you 'pulling in' this and that muscle to get into position (sinking feeling).
But this takes a lot of dedication and perseverence.
Ironmonk how serious are you about W.C?

Medial knee pain is bad. Keep your knees in a line defined by hip and ankle. Adduction comes from the hip turning, *not* pulling the knee in (which will eventually trash your medial meniscus). Do *not* pull your knees in out of that line.
Anterior knee pain below the patella is pretty common in beginners. Back off, rub your knees, and get back to work. Take a day or two off it becomes more frequent.
Respect all joint pain.
