The correct energy and sensitivity in chi sao is hard to train. There are no short-cuts and you need a good teacher so that you can feel what good hands are. It's hard work and takes time.
Regards,
You should have had plenty of responses by now. Maybe everyone is on vacation. :)
Ratan ring may not only be unhelpful, you may actually risk "subtracting" from your Wing Chun by instilling poor habits. "Listening" and responding to a ratan ring for chi sau is not like "listening" and responding to a real person.
AFAIK (and I could be wrong) the idea of the ratan ring may have come from other Wing Chun lines such as YKS. But even they, if I recall right, don't use it for chi sau, but rather to train a sort of splitting energy. I haven't got a clue who first had the chi sau brainstorm.
My suggestion for chi sau would be to find a chi sau partner, and leave the ratan ring alone. Same with inner tubes and other devices. Your Wing Chun will be the better for it, IMHO.

Piping my friend, piping. 'It speaks'! A ring of plastic piping, Hmmm... the jury is still out.
*Note: 'It speaks'. P1,520 of Duncan's 'Wing Chun for Dummies'. The art of listening to inanimate objects to hear if they utter the Kuen Kuit. Caution: Avoid this practise on Clapham Common. It's not the bush you hear speaking but the person lurking behind it*

Howdy folks,
Here are some really nice photos I can across while surfing the internet tonight. Rattan ring training does exist, don't let anyone tell you different. See for yourself!

We use the Teng Huen (Rattan Ring) in YKS/Sum Nung WCK, but as KJ rightly remembered, *not* for Chi Sao.
